The appointee will be responsible for the husbandry and care of laboratory animals, including rodents, genetically modified mice, rabbits, and other approved species, and for supporting the efficient daily operations of the Laboratory Animal Facility (LAF). Key responsibilities include:

  • Provide direct supervision, leadership, and guidance to the laboratory animal care assistant team.
  • Prepare, coordinate, and manage work schedules and assignments for animal care staff.
  • Perform and assist with daily animal husbandry within barrier facilities, including cage changing and related routines.
  • Conduct daily animal inspections and health monitoring, and report clinical signs or concerns promptly to the veterinary team.
  • Ensure compliance with all animal welfare regulations, institutional policies, and relevant animal legislations and ordinances.
  • Enforce health and safety regulations and ensure strict adherence to established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Maintain ongoing communication and coordination with zone supervisors, veterinary staff, office personnel, and research teams.
  • Assist in the training and onboarding of new animal care staff and animal users.
  • Support the maintenance of departmental equipment and facility infrastructure.
  • Track, coordinate, and follow up on repairs and servicing of critical equipment.
  • Operate and maintain sanitation and sterilization equipment, including autoclaves and cage washers.
  • Assist with consumables management, inventory control, and accurate record-keeping.
  • Serve as stand-in for junior staff when required to ensure continuity of operations and the highest hygienic standards.
  • Work on shifts, including Saturdays and public holidays, and provide off-hour on-call coverage when needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements

Applicants should possess:

  • A bachelor’s degree in Zoology, Veterinary Technology, Laboratory Animal Science, or a related discipline;
  • Relevant working experience in a laboratory animal facility;
  • Sound knowledge of animal physiology, behavior, and recognition of clinical signs;
  • Strong leadership, execution capability, and a service-oriented mindset;
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills; and
  • Willingness to learn and develop a long-term career in laboratory animal science.

Applicants with less relevant experience may be considered for appointment at a lower rank.

Advantageous Requirements

  • Familiarity with Tick@lab or similar animal management software.
  • Experience in operating and maintaining autoclaves and cage washers.
  • Possession of a valid Boiler Licence (Class I or Class IIA).

(Duration: 2 years, renewable)

Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Fringe benefits including annual leave, medical and dental benefits will be provided. A gratuity will be payable upon successful completion of contract.
