Purpose of Role:

The Project Cost Controls Intern serves as a supporting financial and analytical resource within the Copper World Project Team. Working closely under the mentorship of the Project Cost Controls Specialist and project management, the intern is responsible for learning and assisting with financial tracking, budget accuracy, and cost controls. This role provides an excellent foundation in capital project accounting, helping bridge data flows between project management, engineering firms, and corporate finance to ensure project tracking remains organized and compliant.

ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Budget & Cost Control Support: Assist in tracking, analyzing, and reporting on project budgets and expenses; this includes supporting the team in preparing initial variance analyses to monitor alignment with budget allocations. 
  • Month-End Coordination Assistance: Support month-end closing activities in partnership with third-party engineering firms and the corporate finance department to help meet strict reporting deadlines. 
  • Financial Data Compilation: Assist in gathering, organizing, and preparing financial data and exhibits for management reviews and monthly project presentations. 
  • Contract & Change Order Monitoring: Learn to monitor contract expenditures, commitments, forecasts, and change orders for existing project contracts. 
  • Cross-Functional Support: Provide helpful data coordination, analytical support, and routine problem-solving assistance across project teams as requested. 
  • Compliance Alignment: Maintain data integrity ensuring that financial records conform strictly to company internal requirements, GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles), and broader regulatory standards. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION:

  • Education: Current enrollment in an undergraduate program pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related business field (preferably junior or senior standing). 
  • Experience: Academic exposure or a strong conceptual understanding of finance, budget tracking, cost control, or bookkeeping within a structured environment. 
  • Technical Skills: Foundational proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel spreadsheets) and an introductory understanding of GAAP, with an interest and adaptability in learning specialized accounting and cost software. 
  • Analytical Ability: Strong attention to detail with an aptitude for learning account reconciliation and identifying financial discrepancies. 
  • Communication: Developing ability to summarize financial data clearly and communicate effectively with both financial and non-financial stakeholders. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Industry Interest: Expressed interest or prior internship exposure within the mining, heavy construction, or engineering industries. 
  • Collaboration Aptitude: Eagerness to collaborate in structured environments alongside third-party consultants or engineering firms. 
  • Systems Familiarity: Classroom exposure or basic familiarity with enterprise-level ERP systems, databases, or specialized project management software.
