Wayne Metropolitan Community Action Agency consists of staff dedicated to serving others, which include professionalism, empathy, respect, excellent client service, maintaining confidentiality, punctuality with regular attendance. We provide assistance to low to moderate income families to help address their most critical needs. The agency has over 70 programs, including valuable educational, housing, and emergency services.
Internship Description:
- Wayne Metro seeks a detail-oriented and client-focused individual with a passion for community service and financial empowerment. This internship provides hands-on experience in tax preparation, client interaction, and program outreach, offering an excellent opportunity to develop skills in financial literacy, data management, and public service. The ideal candidate will work collaboratively with the Tax Program team to support clients through the intake, tax preparation, and quality review process, including conducting client interviews, verifying documentation, and assisting with accurate tax return preparation in compliance with IRS and organizational standards. Interns will also assist with data entry, promote savings initiatives at tax time, support outreach efforts to increase program capacity, and contribute to community events and trainings while upholding strict standards of confidentiality, privacy, and professionalism.
Interns Essential Functions:
- Greet and assist clients through the intake, tax preparation and quality review process.
- Provide an accurate tax return upholding the highest quality and ethical standards.
- Complete intake/interview with client to obtain information and verify documents.
- Facilitate integration of Wayne Metro programs and saving products and services.
- Comply and follow security, privacy, confidentiality and standard of conducts set by the IRS and Wayne Metro.
- Assist in preparation and completion of data entry of files.
- Assist in efforts to promote and increase capacity of the Tax Program.
- Attend training and assist in organizing community events.
- Promote saving at tax time.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualified candidates:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Minimum of one year of experience in tax preparation
- Highly organized, attentive to detail and solution-oriented.
- Minimum Competencies:
- Working knowledge of basic internet applications and programs including Google technology and Microsoft Office Word and Excel. The ability to learn and utilize the necessary programs and office equipment for this position.
- Willingness to complete IRS VITA/TCE Program Certifications within two weeks of date of hire.
- Maintain a positive attitude towards assigned work, clients, and staff.
- Ability to multitask and work well under pressure.
- Uses sound judgment and initiative to analyze and resolve problems.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in written form.
- Good interpersonal and professional skills including but not limited to professional appearance, tact, punctuality, planning, organizing and dependability.
- Ability to provide services for those persons facing economic, social, health, age, and educational barriers.
- Ability to work independently or in a team environment (as deemed necessary).
- Perform work in a manner that upholds Wayne Metro policies and procedures.
Physical Requirements:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. This job operates in a professional office environment with a usually quiet noise level. This is largely a sedentary role and the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, frequently use hands and to talk or hear.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma/general education degree (GED) OR a combination of education and experience that is similarly equivalent.
- Pass Criminal Background check & Drug Screening
- Ability to work a hybrid schedule
