The Lactation Consultant will collaborate with other members of the health care and WIC teams to ensure the promotion, protection, and support of lactation feeding. They will provide direct patient/participate care for the lactating client and infant. The Lactation Consultant will report to the WIC Program Manager with support from the Perinatal Services Manager, and reports to the Center Manager at designated facility locations for center operation concerns.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Promote human milk feeding as the norm to all pregnant and postpartum patients/participants and their families or support persons
  • Assesses and counsels patients/participants, and families, with complex lactation concerns
  • Communicate with providers regarding patient condition and document individualized care plan in the electronic health record (EHR) or WIC WISE system
  • Assist in maintaining and tracking lactation supplies inventory
  • Assist in developing lactation education materials
  • Follow-up with patients/participants with subsequent appointments or by telephone/video
  • Demonstrate use and/or issue manual or electronic breast pumps
  • Participates in professional meetings, trainings, and continuing education
  • Participates in quality improvement measures for perinatal and/or lactation outcomes
  • Provides participant/patient centered counseling using motivational interviewing techniques
  • Acts on all referrals and warm hand-offs from other health care or WIC team members regarding complex lactation situations beyond their scope of practice
  • Works within the scope of practice as defined by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBCLE) and follows Standards of Practice as defined by their professional association, International Lactation Consultant Association, and adheres to policies, procedures, and guidelines of care
  • Schedule patients for appointments needed other services outside of the IBCLC scope of practice including but not limited to social worker, dietitian, nurse, or medical provider
  • Supports baby friendly health center initiatives including competency-based employee trainings on infant feeding appropriate to the departments of practice
  • Facilitates classes education to patients/participants and their families or support persons
  • Travel to different sites as needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Highs School Diploma or GED
  • Certification as an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC)
  • Strong oral and written communication skills 
  • Valid BLS certificate or ability to obtain one prior to hire date
  • Valid California driver’s license, proof of auto insurance, and personal transportation
  • One (1) year of paid experience working with prenatal clients
  • Reliable Transportation and flexibility to travel to other sites. 

 

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with patients/participants, staff, and the public
  • Ability to utilize basic computer programs such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher as well as electronic documentation in an Electronic Health Record and WIC WISE
  • Ability to work with a diverse population
  • Knowledge of instructional skills and educational techniques to influence and guide patients/participants in care plan development and positive behavior change
  • Knowledge of lactation principles to assess needs and provide counseling and education to families
  • Knowledge and skilled in the physiology and clinical management of lactation
  • Knowledge of the lactation process, antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum health care and psychosocial issues

 

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work may require sitting for long periods of time; also stooping, bending and stretching for files and supplies. Occasionally lifts items weighing up to 25 pounds. Requires manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, calculator, telephone, copier, and such other office equipment as necessary. Vision must be correctable to 20/40 and hearing must be in the normal range for telephone contacts.
