Job Description

  We are currently seeking a full-time Safety Specialist responsible for supporting the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of safety policies, programs, and procedures that protect employees, guests, and mission critical operations.  MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Support Safety Programs & Compliance  Assist in implementing and maintaining safety policies and procedures aligned with local, state, and federal regulations.  Support organizational compliance with OSHA standards and applicable safety regulations; maintain awareness of evolving requirements and best practices.  Maintain required OSHA documentation, including accurate and timely updates to OSHA 300, 300A, and 200 logs.  Inspections, Audits & Hazard Identification  Conduct routine safety inspections, audits, and risk assessments to identify hazards and ensure corrective actions are completed.  Monitor safety conditions across campus and report issues promptly to leadership.  Assist in evaluating safety data and trends to recommend improvements in processes, equipment, or systems.  Incident Response & Investigation  Support staff during emergency responses, alarms, and critical incidents by following established protocols and assisting with decision‑making as directed.  Participate in investigations of workplace accidents, injuries, and near misses; assist with root cause analysis and development of preventive measures.  Life Safety & Operational Support  Assist with the operation, testing, and documentation of Space Center Houston’s security and life safety systems.  Maintain effective communication with NASA Johnson Space Center safety personnel and local emergency management partners as directed.  Maintain accurate records of safety incidents, inspections, training, and compliance activities.  Training, Communication & Engagement  Support safety training programs, committee meetings, and initiatives that reinforce a strong safety culture.  Assist in preparing safety reports, metrics, and recommendations for leadership review.  Help foster positive working relationships with internal departments, contractors, and external agencies.  Administrative & Vendor Support  Provides Safety Orientation Training and assists with onboarding of vendors and contractors.   Assist with monitoring vendor and contractor safety compliance and maintenance agreements.  Support budget‑related tasks such as tracking expenses, materials, and safety program needs.  Participate in professional development activities to stay informed on emerging trends in the safety field.  POSITION QUALIFICATIONS: Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in occupational safety, emergency response, or related field.  Associate degree preferred; equivalent experience considered.  Working knowledge of OSHA regulations, life safety codes, and industry standards.  Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize tasks and support multiple projects.  Ability to deliver or assist with safety training programs.  Capable of making sound decisions during routine and emergency situations.  Effective communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work collaboratively across departments.  High level of discretion, judgment, and confidentiality.  Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn various software platforms.  Willingness to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays as needed.  Availability to respond to emergencies and support extended operations during critical incidents.  PHYSICAL ABILITIES/WORKING CONDITIONS:  Ability to move throughout a large public facility, including indoor and outdoor environments, for extended periods.  Ability to climb stairs, ramps, and occasionally ladders to access mechanical rooms, rooftops, or restricted areas.  Ability to stand, walk, or remain mobile during inspections, emergency responses, or incident follow‑ups.  Ability to hear and respond to alarms, radio communications, and verbal instructions in dynamic environments.  Ability to communicate clearly and professionally during emergencies, drills, and interactions with staff, guests, and first responders.  Ability to work in varying environmental conditions, including heat, humidity, rain, or cold.  Ability to respond quickly and safely to minor emergencies, alarms, or safety incidents anywhere on campus.  Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, or reach to assess hazards, inspect equipment, or assist with minor cleanup or containment.  Ability to lift, carry, or move equipment or materials up to 25–35 pounds (e.g., safety cones, barricades, spill kits, fire extinguishers).
