Job Description

SUMMARY

The Wireless Network Technician is responsible for the design, implementation, maintenance, and optimization of wireless network infrastructure across VTXC service areas. This role supports tower operations, customer deployments, and network performance through RF analysis, system configuration, and at times, fieldwork in outdoor environments.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Design, implement, and maintain wireless network configurations 
  • Perform wireless site surveys and RF evaluations to ensure optimal coverage and performance 
  • Configure and optimize access points, radios, and tower equipment 
  • Monitor and improve network performance using Layer 2 and Layer 3 technologies (VLANs, routing, switching) 
  • Collaborate with OSP teams and installers to support customer turn-ups and service deployments 
  • Assist tower personnel with site installations, equipment upgrades, and replacements 
  • Troubleshoot network, RF, and connectivity issues across the wireless infrastructure 
  • Maintain compliance with OSHA and company safety standards

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

 

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

Valid Driver License and an insurable driving record.

Must pass pre-employment drug screen, physical and background checks.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Basic knowledge of CO concepts, operation, maintenance and repair in the following related subjects: basic electricity, basic telephony, AC /DC power, grounding and protection
  • Knowledge of networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP) 
  • Understanding of VLANs (802.1Q) and basic routing concepts 
  • Understanding of Wi-Fi standards (802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ax) 
  • Familiarity with RF fundamentals (RSSI, SNR, interference, link performance) 
  • Experience with Point-to-Point (PtP) and Point-to-Multipoint (PtMP) wireless systems preferred 
  • Familiarity with wireless platforms such as Tarana, Cambium or MikroTik preferred 
  • Experience with cabling tools (RJ45 crimpers, cable testers) and PoE systems 
  • Ability to work at heights and in outdoor environments, including varying weather conditions 
  • Ability to lift and install networking equipment 
  • Relevant certifications (CompTIA Network+, CCNA, JNCIA) preferred

On-Call RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Serve in a scheduled on-call rotation to support production systems outside of standard business hours.
  • Monitor system performance and respond promptly to alerts, outages, and service disruptions.
  • Diagnose technical issues, implement fixes or workarounds, and coordinate with cross-functional teams when escalation is required.
  • Contribute to root cause analysis and continuous improvement efforts following incidents.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to high, precarious places and outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to risk of electrical shock. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, and fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
