Job Description

PURPOSE:

To coordinate and oversee stagehand and scenic work related to the construction, mounting and running of San Francisco Opera productions. Manage and coordinate facility related areas.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Works with the Managing Director: Production and Technical & Safety Director to determine technical design and requirements of designers and directors, as well as incoming productions and co-productions.
  • Reviews and coordinates productions with designers, directors, opera staff, co-producers and outside producers, ensuring all concerned departments are informed about production needs, challenges and schedules.
  • Assist in preparing bid documents and monitors construction and scenic artwork to ensure that productions are built within designers’ concept and San Francisco Opera budget.
  • Manages installation and running of SF Opera productions.
  • Works with the Managing Director: Production, Director of Production Operations & Media, and Technical & Safety Director to prepare and monitor production budgets and schedules (ie: future season Budget Calendar planning).
  • Generates and disseminates floor plans, sections, hanging plots, construction drawings and other technical documentation.
  • Creates, disseminates, coordinates and oversees the completion of technical notes.
  • Represents production department at rehearsals as necessary.
  • Supports and enforces the company safety program including, but not limited to, state and federally mandated safety programs.
  • Manages regular facility repair, maintenance, and improvement requests with War Memorial Engineering.
  • Assists the Technical & Safety Director in planning and managing facility and safety related projects and improvements.
  • Participate in the smooth running of the production rentals program along with the Associate Production Director, including coordinating the database, keeping rentals paperwork updated, and serving as a point person for inquiries.
  • In coordination with Managing Director: Production and the Technical & Safety Director ensures compliance with stagehand and scenic artist union collective bargaining agreements.

SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:

  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
  • Provides logistical support for incoming and outgoing productions.
  • When needed, provide meeting coverage for Technical Schedule at weekly Heads Schedule Meeting.

EDUCATION: 

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university preferred, or equivalent work experience.
  • Completion of an accredited VectorWorks or AutoCAD training course required.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum five (5) years professional technical theater experience in a large scale repertory setting.
  • Experience overseeing staff.

PREREQUISITE SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS:

  • Knowledge of: Shop and stage operations, scenic construction, stage rigging and automation, scenic painting, stage lighting, sound, and media; theater production and Opera repertoire
  • Ability to travel for production and scene shop surveys 
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, VectorWorks, AutoCAD; database skills desirable.
  • Ability to work independently; prioritize tasks; and exercise good judgment and initiative.
  • Ability to determine priorities as well as manage multiple, competing priorities successfully.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills including the ability to interact with artists, staff, the public, and volunteers in a professional, confidential and tactful manner.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Able to sit at a computer and/or production desk for up to and over eight hours per day; see clearly in low-light situations such as are common backstage and in the theater; and walk on complex stage settings to accomplish the construction, rehearsal, and safe operations of productions.
  • Must perform the functions of the position in a safe manner.
