JOB SUMMARY:
As a member of the SA Program Office, The DR Grader is responsible for accurately assessing retinal images using AI-assisted screening tools to identify signs of diabetic retinopathy and other ocular conditions. The role supports the delivery of high-quality, accessible eye care services within Cape Town City Health facilities in Khayelitsha-Eastern sub-structure, contributing to early detection and prevention of vision loss among patients with diabetes. The grader also ensures appropriate and timely referral of patients requiring further evaluation by an ophthalmologist.
Background:

Specific goal of project:
This project aims to strengthen the capacity of City Health facilities in Khayelitsha-Eastern Sub-structure to deliver high-quality diabetic retinopathy (DR) screening services, thereby reducing the burden of avoidable vision loss. Through targeted training, mentorship, and the integration of innovative approaches, including AI-supported screening, the initiative seeks to enhance early detection and timely referral within the health system.
Position Description:
Working closely with Orbis International and facility management teams, the Grader will support the implementation of diabetic retinopathy (DR) services across four facilities within the City Health KESS subdistrict. The role will focus on screening and grading retinal images for patients with diabetes, contributing to early detection, appropriate referral, and overall strengthening of DR service delivery within the project.

Cape Town, Khayelitsha, South Africa
REPORTING & WORKING RELATIONSHIPS
- Reports to Program Coordinator WC, Orbis International
- Reports to City Health Facility Manager
- Works Closely with MEL Officer Orbis International
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS / KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Specific tasks include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Taking images of the retina of patients.
- Grading retinal images using AI to determine the presence or absence of diabetic retinopathy,
- Liaising with nurse and ophthalmologist at KDH for confirmation of screening and grading findings.
- Communicating DR screening results to patients and assisting in their referrals.
- Providing education on diabetic retinopathy to patients.
- Capturing screening data for reporting to the KESS and ORBIS monthly.
- Assisting in on-site data collection for proposed AI study
- Write and present a report on project activities.
- Participate in other project related activities as required
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
- Grade 12/ Matric
- No experience required
- No medical background is required for candidates
SKILLS & ABILITIES
- Computer Literacy
- Proficiency in Microsoft (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Word and Teams)
