From brilliant creatives, to technology trailblazers, across the globe, WBD offers career defining opportunities, thoughtfully curated benefits, and the tools to explore and grow into your best selves. Here you are supported, here you are celebrated, here you can thrive.

About the Role

We are looking for a Software Engineering Manager to lead a team building and evolving CNN’s Experimentation Tooling platform. This team enables product, editorial, and growth teams across Web, Mobile, and CTV to rapidly validate ideas through easy, frictionless, and effective experimentation. As a people manager, you will be accountable for team health, delivery, and technical direction, while partnering closely with Product Management, Data, Design, and Platform teams. You will help scale experimentation across the organization by reducing friction, improving reliability and performance, and building tools that teams genuinely want to use. This role blends people leadership, technical stewardship, and cross‑functional collaboration in a high‑impact platform environment.

People Leadership & Team Development

  • Manage, coach, and grow a team of software engineers, supporting career development, performance feedback, and engagement.

  • Foster a psychologically safe, inclusive, and high‑ownership team culture.

  • Partner with senior engineering and product leadership on hiring, staffing plans, and capacity management.

  • Set clear expectations and help engineers balance delivery, quality, and sustainable pace.

Technical & Delivery Leadership

  • Guide the design and delivery of a centralized experimentation platform that supports multiple surfaces (Web, iOS, Android, CTV) and teams.

  • Ensure systems are highly reliable, low‑latency, and performant, with minimal impact on end‑user experience.

  • Champion data integrity, security, and privacy by design, including compliance with GDPR and other consent frameworks.

  • Drive pragmatic technical decisions around vendor integrations vs. in‑house solutions, supporting a vendor‑agnostic architecture.

  • Partner with engineers on architectural reviews, technical spikes, and long‑term platform evolution.

  • Lead or be involved in design, discovery, technical planning, and status discussions within your team, where you’ll help set direction and context, and identify any gaps or blockers.

  • Be involved in discussions around high level planning, roadmaps, and status with teams across the organization.

  • Contribute technically by performing code reviews, providing guidance with implementation, or writing code directly.

Product & Cross‑Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with Product Management to translate experimentation strategy into clear technical roadmaps and milestones.

  • Collaborate with Data and Analytics partners to surface source‑of‑truth metrics and automate experiment analysis and reporting.

  • Partner with Platform and Infrastructure teams to enable edge and server‑side experimentation and scale concurrent testing.

  • Act as an advocate for internal users, treating platform tooling as a product with customers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience)

  • Direct experience managing and growing engineering team members. 2+ years of experience preferred.

  • Experience managing software engineers as a people manager, including hiring, coaching, and performance management.

  • 7+ years of hands-on software engineering experience

  • Strong technical background in modern software engineering, with the ability to guide architecture and design discussions.

  • Proven ability to work cross‑functionally with product, data, and platform stakeholders.

  • Hands on experience with various cloud services such as load balancers, EC2, SQS, SNS, Kafka, and CDNs on platforms such as AWS and Fastly.

  • Demonstrated experience in developing and managing sophisticated back-end platforms and libraries that support integration across multiple engineering teams, while serving the needs of multiple product and design teams.

  • Clear communication skills and comfort operating in a distributed, hybrid team environment.

  • Experience with experimentation, A/B testing platforms, feature flagging, or analytics tooling.

  • Familiarity with performance critical systems, edge computing, or server side rendering.

  • Experience integrating and optimizing deployment pipelines (CI/CD)

Nice to haves

  • Experience delivering platforms or internal tooling used by multiple teams.

  • Demonstrated success in rapidly learning new technologies, languages, or frameworks.

  • Familiarity with a wide range of languages, frameworks, platforms, and/or SDKs, especially NodeJS, VueJS, React, Python, Swift, Kotlin, Java.

  • Experience with databases such as MongoDB or PostgreSQL.

  • Experience balancing vendor solutions with custom‑built platforms.
