Role Overview

We are hiring a Senior Manager, Data Engineering to lead both backend data platform engineering and functional data ownership for Japan and Korea. This role is hands‑on and senior‑individual‑contributor focused, with strong ownership of data platforms, pipelines, and in-house business‑critical data products.

The role requires deep technical expertise, strong data‑flow understanding, and the ability to work closely with business, offshore team/vendors, and global teams in both English and Japanese.

Key Responsibilities

Backend & Platform Engineering

  • Design, build, and operate scalable, cloud‑native data platforms. Eg AWS, Azure, GCP,  Snowflake.
  • Develop and maintain reliable, automated data pipelines supporting analytics and business operations.
  • Own development, test, and production environments for the Japan and Korea data platform.
  • Lead CI/CD, source control, configuration management, and deployment for data services.
  • Define and promote data engineering best practices, architecture standards, Data modeling and security principles.
  • Implement loosely coupled, scalable architectures using Infrastructure‑as‑Code principles.

Functional Engineering & Data Product Ownership

  • Act as functional owner for inhouse data products, ensuring data quality, usability, and business relevance.
  • Analyze complex data flows and lead root‑cause investigation for data issues.
  • Translate business requirements into robust data models and analytics‑ready datasets.
  • Partner closely with business analysts, marketing analytics, product owners, and downstream analytics teams.

Collaboration & Communication

  • Work effectively with local and global engineering teams, vendors, and business stakeholders including leading off-shore team.
  • Communicate technical concepts, issues, and solutions clearly in English and Japanese.
  • Support cross‑team alignment and stable operations of data platforms in Japan and Korea.

Core Technical Requirements

  • 6+ years od Data Engineering Experience
  • Strong ANSI SQL skills (DDL, DML, DCL).
  • Hands‑on experience with cloud based data services (e.g., Glue, Athena, EMR for AWS) .
  • Experience with big‑data frameworks such as Spark, Hadoop, Hive, Presto, HBase, or Phoenix.
  • Strong scripting and automation skills using Python, Bash, or similar languages.
  • Solid understanding of distributed systems, data structures, and performance optimization.
  • Experience with Git‑based source control and CI/CD tools.
  • Familiarity with workflow schedulers such as Airflow or TIDAL.
  • Language - Business level of English, Conversational or above Japanese (80% of the position will be in English, 20% will be in Japanese)

Nice to Have

  • Java/J2EE, Spring, RESTful services, or microservices experience.
  • Exposure to NoSQL databases (DynamoDB, Cassandra, MongoDB) and Linux OS.
  • Experience with CloudFormation, Terraform, or other IaC tools.
  • Experience supporting analytics dashboards or visualization tools.
  • Knowledge of build tools such as Maven, Gradle, or Jenkins.

  • Ability to bridge technical depth with business context.
  • Relevant cloud or data certifications are a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Engineering, or related field preferred.
