Job Description

Perform a variety of manual tasks to maintain Nicolet Park grounds, Restrooms and to provide supervision within the park; perform other duties as assigned; occasionally may be required to assist in other parks as directed.

Under the direction of the Parks Division, the person in this position will be responsible for the execution of all field and landscaping maintenance tasks to ensure safe and pristine playing surfaces. In addition, the person in this position will be responsible for cleaning onsite restrooms and tending to the common areas as required. Manage visitors and guests.

  1. Open and close park restrooms and other appropriate amenities.
  2. Perform general clean-up of grounds and facilities including restrooms, dugouts, parking lots, splash pad and all open use areas.
  3. Maintain the sanitation of the restrooms, grounds, common areas, and splash pad. In bathrooms: replace toilet tissue and paper towels; mop the floors; clean the toilets, walls, stalls, sinks, paper towel holders; change light bulbs as required; perform any additional sanitation and general maintenance required or directed.
  4. Check and stock supplies and equipment: toilet paper, paper towels, toilet brush, plunger, garden hose, cleaning disinfectant, push broom, mop, bucket, trash can liners, electric blowers, and extension cords, and other supplies as directed or required.
  5. Notify Supervisor to reorder new supplies and purchase needed equipment.
  6. Assist with the playing fields game use preparation by grooming fields, chalking, lining, painting, and marking designation boxes.
  7. Report any maintenance, vandalism, or unsafe conditions throughout the park to the Supervisor and complete required reports.
  8. Operate and maintain all equipment in a safe manner.
  9. Ensure all work in the park has been completed prior to leaving the work shift, such that no additional daily maintenance is required in the morning.
  10. Monitor Park participation daily (seven days/ work – hours vary per assigned schedule).
  11. Provide daily support to Splash Pad staff during operating hours. 
  12. Perform all other tasks as the needs are identified and assigned.
  13. Always conducts oneself in a professional manner as a representative of the St. Mary’s County Recreation and Parks Department.
  1. Must have the ability to gain working knowledge of St. Mary’s County Government policies and procedures.

  2. Must have the ability to gain the necessary knowledge of safety regulations and established procedures for operating equipment, as well as for ensuring public safety.

  3. Must have the Knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of various construction and maintenance projects as assigned. 

  4. Must have the ability to safely operate a motor vehicle and various heavy equipment.

  5. Must be able to take direction and work in a fast-paced environment.

  6. Requires the ability to stand, walk, stoop, and kneel for long periods of time.

  7. Requires the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

  8. Must be able to work around dust, fumes, and odors and have the ability to work outdoors.

  9. Must have enough manual dexterity to operate hand and power tools. Including, but limited to, blowers, weed eaters, edgers, hedge trimmers, pole saw, power washer, etc.

  10. Must be able to tolerate exposure to vegetation that may cause punctures, insect bites, wildlife, and off-leash dogs.

  11. Must have the ability to take initiative to improve the grounds and facilities and communicate suggestions to supervisor.

  12. Must be able to read printed instructions and possess basic math and language skills.

  1. High school diploma or G.E.D.


Additional Requirements:

  1. Must be at least 18 years old.
  2. Must Pass a pre-employment physical examination prior to employment.
  3. Must possess a valid Maryland Driver’s License and clean driving record.
  4. Position is classified as safety sensitive and shall be subject to drug and alcohol testing.


Physical and Environmental Conditions: 

Work requires constant physical effort including some lifting or handling of heavy tools or materials of 50 pounds or more in addition to driving heavy vehicles.

Work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress requiring a range of safety and other precautions. Such situations include, but are not limited to, extreme weather conditions, and park patrons’ questions, complaints, or confrontational behavior.
