Role Overview
The Construction and Commissioning Senior Mechanical Engineer (HRSG / SCR / Stack Systems) is a senior-level role responsible for providing technical support to construction and commissioning activities across power generation projects, with a focus on Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSGs), Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems, bypass stacks, and exhaust stack systems.
The primary focus of the role is to support site execution through timely resolution of technical issues, including project Action Requests (PARs), field installation and commissioning challenges, RFIs / TQs, procedures development and improvement
The engineer serves as a key interface between site teams TFAs (Technical Field Advisors), Engineering, Quality, and Suppliers, ensuring that issues are resolved efficiently and in alignment with OEM requirements, contract specifications, and field conditions.
In parallel, the role supports the development, review, and improvement of procedures, ensuring that lessons learned from site execution are captured and integrated into future deliverables.
This position supports Simple Cycle (SC), Combined Cycle (CCGT), and Combined Heat and Power Projects (CCHP) in Multi Shaft and Single Shaft configurations and requires the ability to operate independently in a fast-paced, execution-driven environment.
Key Responsibilities
- They should be able to evaluate and apply methods and techniques, implement standard engineering criteria, and use independent judgment with minimal supervision.
- The ideal candidate should have a strong understanding of HRSG construction and related systems, including pressure parts (headers, drums, coils), ducting, exhaust stacks, bypass stack systems, and SCR systems. Knowledge of main power plant auxiliary components, including lubrication systems, fuel gas systems, air cooling systems, and other auxiliary equipment is also required.
- Provide timely resolution of PARs, RFIs/TQs, and field issues supporting construction and commissioning activities. Interface with site teams, engineering, quality, and suppliers to resolve technical issues efficiently. Review field conditions and provide engineering guidance to support safe and compliant execution.
- Support root cause analysis (RCA) and ensure solutions align with design, procedures, and contract requirements.
- Develop and review mechanical erection and commissioning procedures. Interpret engineering documents (P&IDs, drawings, specifications). Incorporate lessons learned from site execution into procedure updates
- Coordinate with cross-functional teams to support construction, commissioning, and startup activities.
- Participate in project meetings and provide mechanical technical input. Ensure alignment between engineering deliverables and site execution
- Ensure compliance with safety standards, company procedures, and contractual requirements. Promote safe work practices across all activities.
- Mentor junior engineers and support team collaboration
- Prepare technical reports, documentation, and presentations.
- Review equipment specifications and supplier documentation.
Requirement
- A bachelor's degree (BS) in Mechanical Engineering.
- 12 or more years of direct experience in power generation, construction, industrial operation, or a combination of education, training, and experience.
- Experience with basic software packages such as Project Schedule P6 or similar would also be an asset.
- Knowledge of ISO procedures and OSHA safety requirements would also be an asset.
- The ability to interpret technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form, analyze problems of either machine-related or computer-generated data, and have the ability to communicate clearly.
- At least 50% international and domestic travel by land/air will be required for this role.
