POSITION SUMMARY 

Reporting to the Clinical Manager in Mental Health, the RN will be part of the multidisciplinary team that offers crisis intervention, assessment and treatment for children and adolescents who have complex and severe mental health issues. 
 

RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate nursing care for patients and families. 
  • Function in an “in charge” role when required 
  • Participate in the development and implementation of inpatient programming 
  • Offer support/counselling to individual patients and their families 
  • Provide appropriate learning experiences for the patient and family 
  • Offer mentoring experience to students and new staff 
  • Conduct mental health assessments of those children/youth and their families 
  • Liaise with the CHEO Emergency Department staff and psychiatry on-call services. 
  • Work in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team in the identification and referrals to appropriate resources upon discharge from the ED. 

QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Vulnerable Sector Check (Essential) 
  • Current Certification of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (Essential) 
  • Current CPR Certification (Essential) 
  • Demonstrated culturally sensitive approach to nursing care (Essential) 
  • Baccalaureate Degree of Nursing  (Preferred) 
  • Certificate in Mental Health Nursing (Preferred) 
  • Previous psychiatric nursing experience (Preferred) 
  • Excellent team work and interpersonal skills (Essential) 
  • Knowledge of mental health legislation, treatment modalities and experience with crisis intervention or other appropriate combinations of education and experience, along with the demonstrated knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the duties of the position, may be considered in lieu of stated education and experience. (Essential) 
  • Experience with Crisis Intervention (Essential) 
  • Demonstrated organizational, time management and coordination skills. (Essential) 
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize multiple competing workload demands and to manage stressful situations effectively. (Essential) 
  • Demonstrated excellent critical thinking, communication (verbal & written) and interpersonal skills required. (Essential) 
  • Ability to work collaboratively on an interdisciplinary mental health/health team   (Essential) 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of child/youth development, cultural competence, trauma informed care. (Essential) 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and commitment to Family Centred Care required. (Essential) 
  • Excellent problem-solving and conflict resolution skills with an ability to work with clients to resolve or stabilize crisis.(Essential) 
  • Demonstrated awareness of community resources in our region. (Preferred) 
  • Demonstrated capacity for coping with challenging clinical situations. (Essential) 
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development and skills. (Essential) 
  • Bilingualism (French and English) (Preferred) 
  • A working understanding of RNAO Substance Abuse Guidelines and application to Paediatric Mental Health.(Preferred)

Effective March 29, 2021, CHEO will conduct a more comprehensive pre-screening and evaluation process.  This process may include more varied and multidimensional testing such as a written test, practical exam, or other assessment. All candidates who meet the essential and preferred qualifications may be tested.
 

Bilingualism (French/English) will be validated by a language proficiency assessment conducted by a third party provider. Candidates will be required to meet the minimum linguistic profile prior to the date of hire.
