Diagnostic Laboratory Technician I
Job Description
The Diagnostic Laboratory Technician I performs diagnostic testing and laboratory procedures to support animal health and veterinary services. This role includes a structured 90-day on-the-job training program covering all technical responsibilities.
Responsibilities include processing specimens, performing molecular diagnostics (PCR), conducting immunoassay testing (ELISA), and reporting results to the veterinary team. The position operates in a fast-paced laboratory environment requiring precision, organization, and adherence to quality and biosecurity standards.
This position reports directly to the Laboratory Director.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Prepare, process, analyze, store and ship samples according to standard operating procedures (SOPs)
- Perform PCR-based techniques such as extraction of DNA/RNA, prepare Master Mix for PCR reactions, and analysis of run curves
- Work with hazardous chemicals and biological materials (handling and disposal) using appropriate PPE
- Perform and document preventative maintenance procedures to ensure instrumentation is functioning properly
- Perform Feed testing, including particle size and NIR test.
- Monitor and report scientific progress to ensure that appropriate Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) procedures are followed
- Works independently and manages multiple testing protocols routinely
- Complies with company and departmental SOPs and strictly adheres to biosecurity policies and procedures to ensure QA and QC requirements are met
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Strong attention to detail and maintaining organized and accurate records
- Ability to work in a fast-paced molecular laboratory environment utilizing meticulous skills requiring a high level of precision
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Effectively manages projects and workload as assigned by management and the veterinary team
- A willingness to learn new techniques and procedures and equipment
- Customer service mindset with strong interpersonal and commutation skills-both written and verbal
- Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Power Point and Outlook)
Education and Experience:
- Associate’s degree in a related field OR
- Two (2) year related lab experience preferred.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered
