Description

We are seeking an enthusiastic and committed Lecturer in ESOL to join the Adult Essential Skills for Work and Life department at Sandwell College.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced ESOL practitioner who is passionate about supporting adult learners within the further education sector. You will play a key role in delivering engaging and inclusive ESOL provision, helping learners develop the language, employability and life skills needed to progress into further study, employment and everyday life.

Working closely with the wider curriculum team, you will contribute to the continued growth and development of the ESOL provision, ensuring learners receive a high-quality and supportive learning experience across College and community-based settings.


Key Responsibilities

  • Plan, prepare and deliver engaging ESOL lessons to diverse learner groups, including employability-focused programmes. 
  • Deliver high-quality teaching, learning and assessment that supports learner progression from Foundation level through to Level 2. 
  • Assess learner progress regularly and provide constructive feedback to support achievement and development. 
  • Use systems such as MS Teams, Moodle, ProMonitor and EBS to support teaching, tracking and learner engagement. 
  • Act as a course tutor and provide effective pastoral and academic support to learners. 
  • Organise and support enrichment activities, educational visits and guest speaker sessions. 
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, external agencies and community organisations to support learner progression and integration. 
  • Support the expansion and development of the ESOL provision through innovative teaching approaches and inclusive practice. 
  • Participate in staff meetings, training and continuing professional development activities, including evening delivery during term time.


Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • An ESOL subject specialism or willingness to work towards one. 
  • A teaching qualification such as a Certificate in Education or Level 5 Teaching Qualification. 
  • Experience teaching ESOL within a further education or adult learning environment. 
  • Experience delivering “Skills for Life” qualifications and Entry Level provision. 
  • Experience teaching Entry Level Functional Skills or ICT. 
  • Knowledge of curriculum development and inclusive teaching practice. 
  • Strong organisational, communication and administrative skills. 
  • Experience working collaboratively with external agencies and community groups.

Teaching Qualifications & Salary Banding

To be eligible for our Qualified Lecturer salary banding (£31,837 - £48,160), you must hold one of the following teaching qualifications:

Accepted Qualifications:
  • DTTLS (Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector)
  • Certificate in Education
  • PGCE (Postgraduate Certificate in Education)
  • ProfGCE (Professional Graduate Certificate in Education) 
  • DET (Diploma in Education and Training)
  • DiT (Diploma in Teaching) – if for a vocational subject
If you do not hold one of the above qualifications, you will fall into our Unqualified Lecturer salary banding (£26,661 - £29,998).

Not Accepted as Stand Alone Qualifications:
  • PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector)
  • CTLLS (Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector)
  • CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) 
  • SFHEA (Senior Fellowship)
  • Masters in Education
  • TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language)
