Job Description
We are seeking a dependable and safety-focused Driver to join our waste management team. The Driver/Driver team is responsible for operating garbage trucks to collect and transport residential, commercial, or industrial waste and recyclables. This is a hands-on role. In addition to driving, you'll be physically collecting and loading waste and recyclables throughout your route. This position requires excellent driving skills, attention to safety procedures, and strong customer service.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate garbage trucks and waste collection vehicles safely and efficiently
- Physically collect, lift, and load waste and recyclable materials into the truck along assigned routes
- Collect and transport solid waste, recyclables, and other materials along assigned routes
- Perform daily vehicle inspections and basic maintenance checks
- Ensure all loads are properly secured and transported according to company and DOT regulations
- Works as part of a two-person crew, rotating between driving and hands-on waste collection (throwing) throughout the route
- Maintain accurate route logs, mileage, and disposal records
- Follow all safety policies, traffic laws, and environmental regulations
- Report on vehicle issues, accidents, or unsafe conditions immediately
- Provide courteous and professional service to customers and the public
- Assist with loading and unloading when necessary
Qualifications
- Valid CDL (Commercial Driver's License) required
- Previous commercial driving or waste management experience preferred
- Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions
- Ability to lift, push, and pull heavy materials as needed
- Strong knowledge of safety procedures and defensive driving practices
- Reliable attendance and punctuality
Physical Requirements
- Ability to repeatedly lift, carry, push, pull, and handle heavy containers, carts, and materials throughout the shift, including lifting up to 50 to 100 pounds with or without assistance
- Frequent climbing in and out of the truck cab and safely entering/exiting the vehicle multiple times per route
- Ability to walk long distances, stand for extended periods, and frequently bend, stoop, kneel, reach, twist, and crouch
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and humidity, with exposure to dust, odors, and noise
- Ability to safely operate hydraulic controls and lifting equipment
- Good hand-eye coordination, depth perception, and the alertness required to safely operate a commercial vehicle
- Ability to meet company physical fitness and DOT medical requirements
- Ability to wear required PPE, including gloves, safety vest, steel-toe boots, and eye protection
- Ability to work long hours, early mornings, weekends, and overtime as required, with the stamina to complete physically demanding routes daily
