About Lihir
Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. Purpose
The Mechanical Technician will execute safe and effective mechanical maintenance activities to support the reliability, integrity, and availability of fixed plant equipment across operational areas. Perform planned, breakdown, and corrective maintenance tasks in accordance with maintenance strategies, procedures, and work management processes to minimise downtime and support continuous plant operations. Contribute to defect identification, equipment improvement initiatives, and quality maintenance execution while maintaining compliance with safety, environmental, and operational standards.
Essential Duties
- Conduct routine mechanical inspections across operational equipment and record findings to support proactive and planned maintenance activities.
- Execute and assist with breakdown, corrective, and preventative maintenance tasks to restore equipment reliability and operational performance.
- Perform maintenance activities in accordance with site safety standards, isolation procedures, statutory requirements, and company maintenance practices.
- Support Rotable Refurbishments, Fixed Crane Maintenance, and Fixed Compressor Maintenance activities to ensure equipment availability and reliability targets are achieved.
- Maintain accurate maintenance history and equipment records through effective documentation of repairs, inspections, adjustments, and component replacements within maintenance management systems.
- Monitor equipment condition and performance trends, identifying defects, risks, and early signs of failure, escalating findings and recommendations to Supervisors for intervention planning.
- Assist with calibration, testing, and commissioning activities to ensure equipment operates within required performance and operational standards.
- Support spare parts and inventory management through tracking component usage and identifying critical spares requirements for maintenance activities.
- Promote a strong safety culture by actively participating in safety interactions, toolbox meetings, hazard identification, and continuous improvement initiatives aligned to FRM objectives.
Training & Experience
- Significant demonstrated experience in fixed plant maintenance within heavy industry or mining environments, including Fixed Cranes and Compressor maintenance activities.
- Proven experience maintaining and repairing fixed plant equipment including valves, gearbox drives, conveyor systems, pulleys, sprockets, pumps, feeder tracks, interstage screens, vibrating screens, fixed cranes, and compressors.
- Relevant Mechanical Trade Certificate or Engineering Certificate essential, with PNG Driver’s Licence – Class 6 required.
- Sound understanding of safe work procedures, lifting equipment operations, and site HSE requirements.
- Competent in the use of maintenance tools, equipment, and maintenance management systems including SAP and Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving capability with the ability to proactively resolve maintenance issues.
- Effective verbal and written English communication skills with the ability to work across diverse cultural environments.
- Strong interpersonal and active listening skills with the ability to work collaboratively within team environments.
- Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively, adapt to operational changes, and support continuous improvement and waste reduction initiatives.
- Works in accordance with PNG Mine Safety Act, Newmont Standards, Safety Policies and Procedures, Newmont Environment policies and all departmental operating procedures.
- Skilled in the use of SAP sofware.
- Uses interpersonal negotiation skills and influencing skills to maintain the agreed breakdown work against weekly schedules.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word and Excel.
Working Conditions
This is a FIFO role on a 21/21 roster.
