About Lihir

Our Lihir Operation, located on the beautiful island of Niolam, approximately 800km north of Papua New Guinea's capital, Port Moresby, is one of the world’s largest gold mines. Set within a geothermically active, extinct volcanic crater, Lihir operates an open-pit mine producing refractory ore, which undergoes pressure oxidation and conventional leaching to recover gold. Our workforce includes both residential and commute rosters, creating a diverse and dynamic team. Lihir offers a range of recreational facilities, including a gym, sports club, restaurant, bar, swimming pool, tennis and squash courts, and a 9-hole golf course. Your Impact


As a Technician Mechanical, you will play a critical role in maintaining the reliability, safety, and performance of a complex process plant operation. Your work will directly contribute to the safe and efficient operation of key assets including Autoclaves, NCA Tanks, Crushing, Grinding, Flotation circuits, and Conveyor systems.

You will help minimise downtime, improve plant performance, and ensure maintenance activities are carried out to the highest safety, environmental, and operational standards. Through your proactive approach, you will identify risks, reduce waste, and support continuous improvement across the site.

As Part of Our Team, You Will

 

  • Deliver safe and compliant maintenance activities in line with HSE policies and procedures
  • Perform mechanical repairs, fabrication, and maintenance on fixed plant equipment and infrastructure
  • Conduct preventative maintenance inspections to improve plant reliability and reduce downtime
  • Communicate maintenance priorities, issues, and updates effectively with supervisors and work groups
  • Escalate risks, delays, and equipment issues impacting maintenance outcomes
  • Maintain workshop tools, equipment, and facilities in optimal working condition
  • Contribute to a collaborative and inclusive team culture by sharing knowledge and supporting others
  • Identify opportunities for cost reduction, efficiency improvements, and waste minimisation
  • Work safely within risk management frameworks and apply appropriate controls
  • Uphold operational standards across production, safety, and environmental performance

Prerequisites for Your Success in This Role

 

  • Mechanical Trade Qualification (essential), with NATTB Trades Certificate in Maintenance Fitting highly regarded
  • Minimum Grade 10 education and current PNG Driver’s Licence
  • 3–5 years’ experience in fixed plant maintenance, preferably within mining or heavy industry
  • Proven hands-on experience in mechanical fitting, fabrication, machining, pump rebuilds, and pipe fitting
  • Experience with HDPE poly welding and maintenance of process plant equipment
  • Strong knowledge of hydraulic systems, pumps, valves, crushers, mills, and conveyor systems
  • Familiarity with the PNG Mine Safety Act and site-based HSE systems and procedures
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work both independently and within a team
  • High attention to detail with effective time management and task prioritisation skills
  • Proactive problem-solving approach with a focus on continuous improvement, cost reduction, and waste minimisation
  • Willingness to obtain or currently hold mobile equipment tickets (e.g. forklift, gantry crane)

Your Work Environment


This role is offered on a 28:14 Day/ Night Fly in, Fly out (FIFO) roster to Lihir Island, PNG.

Our FIFO employees stay in a secure and comfortable camp, in an en-suited and airconditioned room equipped with mini fridge, TV and Wi-Fi. A variety of healthy meal options are catered for at our mess; and the wet mess provides a relaxed social setting where employees can unwind with a game of pool or darts.
