Overview & Responsibilities
Position Overview:
The Shop Operations Manager leads all service shop activities to ensure safe, efficient, and profitable performance. This role is responsible for the daily supervision of shop personnel, maintaining high-quality delivery standards, and driving continuous improvement in repair methods, cost control, and workflow efficiency. You will act as a key liaison across departments—including engineering, sales, and project management—to ensure timely completion of critical repairs and high customer satisfaction.
Core Responsibilities:
Operational Leadership: Supervise and coordinate all shop activities to ensure fast, thorough, and accurate repair execution. Manage shift coverage and personnel to maintain 24/7 service capability for emergency jobs.
Safety & Compliance: Enforce strict adherence to safety standards, plant rules, and EHS policies. Lead incident investigations, manage the housekeeping program, and mitigate risks to ensure a zero-harm environment.
Quality & Continuous Improvement: Oversee quality standards for all repair work. Implement best practices and use data to reduce scrap, rework, and waste. Lead continuous improvement initiatives to optimize shop layout, tooling, and repair methods.
Resource & Financial Management: Assist in forecasting manpower and capital equipment needs. Control department expenses, manage profit margins, and implement systems to maximize operational efficiency.
Collaboration: Partner with Engineering, Customer Service, and Project Management to establish accurate completion dates and resolve technical roadblocks. Maintain open communication with sales and production control to align repair scopes with client demand.
Staff Development: Hire, train, and mentor shop personnel. Identify development needs, manage performance, and foster a collaborative, high-morale team culture.
Requirements & Competencies:
Education: B.S. in Engineering or Business Management preferred, or extensive, relevant experience in the turbomachinery service field.
Experience: Minimum 3–5 years of managerial experience in a repair or manufacturing environment.
Technical Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of high-speed rotating equipment (overhaul, installation, and operation). Ability to read/interpret technical drawings and specifications.
Soft Skills: Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to lead cross-functional problem-solving teams and manage complex, multi-million-dollar shop operations.
Working Environment: Ability to work overtime, weekends, and holidays as required to meet customer deadlines.
