Job Description
Title: Middle School Assistant Track Coach
Position Summary: The Middle School Assistant Track & Field Coach supports the Head Coach in developing and maintaining a competitive track & field program that emphasizes student-athlete growth, skill development, teamwork, sportsmanship, and academic success. The Assistant Coach may be assigned to specific event groups (sprints, hurdles, distance, throws, jump, relays) based on expertise.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Assist the Head Coach with planning, organizing, and conducting practices and drills.
- Provide technical instruction, skill development, and event-specific training for assigned groups.
- Reinforce fundamentals, techniques, and strategies that contribute to athlete development
- Promote safe play and proper injury-prevention techniques.
- Supervise athletes during practices, meets, travel, and team events.
- Support the Head Coach in developing meet lineups, strategies, and preparation.
- Encourage and monitor athlete academic achievement and eligibility.
- Promote sportsmanship, teamwork, and respect among athletes, coaches, opponents, and officials at all times.
- Ensure compliance with district, league, state association (e.g. KSHSAA), and NFHS rules and regulations.
- Help with care, distribution, and inventory of track & field equipment, uniforms, and supplies.
- Service as a role model of professionalism, integrity, and high ethical standards on and off the track/field.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Coach or Athletic Director.
Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
- Knowledge of:
- Understanding of track & field training methods for athlete development.
- Familiarity with meet scoring, race strategies, and event management.
- Conditioning, training, and injury-prevention practices.
- Familiarity with district policies, codes of conduct, and eligibility requirements.
- Skills in:
- Ability to teach and demonstrate track & field techniques effectively.
- Strong communication skills with athletes, staff, and parents.
- Organizational skills for practices, meets, and athlete supervision.
- Ability to provide constructive feedback and encouragement.
- Ability to:
- Serve as a positive role model for athletes.
- Work collaboratively with the Head Coach, athletic staff, and administration.
- Adapt to different coaching responsibilities as needed.
- Model professionalism, integrity, and sportsmanship.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions.
- Evening, weekend, and holiday hours are required for practices, matches, tournaments, meetings, and events.
- Position requires physical activity, including demonstrating drills, running, and setting up equipment.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent required; college degree or teaching certification preferred.
- Previous coaching and/or competitive track & field or youth sports experience preferred.
- CPR, First Aide, and AED certification (or ability to obtain)
- Must meet all district and state requirements for employment and coaching.
