Job Description
We’re looking for a P&C Field Technician III to join our fast-growing team and perform field testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting of transmission and distribution protection systems. You’ll work hands-on with relays, pilot channel systems, and substation control equipment, supporting project execution across multiple utility and industrial sites.
- Test and commission protection and control relays (electromechanical, solid state, microprocessor)
- Verify current/voltage inputs, SCADA metering, trip outputs, and local alarms
- Perform troubleshooting, repair, and calibration of substation relaying and control systems
- Commission new substations, including power equipment, pilot channels, and comms systems
- Interpret and apply test procedures, equipment specs, and protection schemes
- Support field service teams with documentation, coordination, and reporting
- Communicate effectively with diverse clients, contractors, and teammates
- Plan and execute tasks efficiently with minimal disruption to ongoing service
- Work outdoors and indoors in utility environments with strict safety protocols
- 5+ years of experience with relay calibration, commissioning, and checkout of protection/control systems
- Familiarity with SCADA, fault/SER systems, integration automation gear, and data analysis
- Strong understanding of three-phase systems, test equipment, wiring, and safety practices
- Skilled in reading wiring and elementary diagrams
- Proven ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- The primary office location will be based on the job location
- Willingness to travel up to 80% across the continental U.S.
- High school diploma or GED required
- Must successfully complete a background check and pre-employment/random drug tests
- Valid driver's license
- Flexible schedule availability, including nights, weekends, and holidays during peak season
- Completion of a trade school program, technical college, associate degree, or skilled trade certification in welding or a related field
- Experience with data centers, commissioning pilot wire/fiber systems, or full substations
- Familiarity with PowerDB or relay test documentation tools
- History of successful project work at RMS or similar power industry firms
