We’re seeking a Lead Substation Technician who excels in high-voltage environments and leads with hands-on expertise and technical precision. This role ensures safe, efficient substation builds while coordinating directly with engineers, project managers, and client teams in the field.
What You’ll Do:
- Oversee conduit, bus, grounding, and cable terminations following project specs
- Lead installation crews to complete high-voltage substation work safely and efficiently
- Directly inspect the installation of motor-operated switches, circuit switchers, and shunt trip mechanisms
- Guide the use of specialized tools and equipment, including hypress tools, magnetic drills, and bus punches
- Ensure proper torqueing and assembly of high-voltage bolted connections using Belleville washers
- Coordinate field troubleshooting and proactively resolve challenges during substation assembly
- Perform daily safety briefings, enforce jobsite safety, and model best practices
- Serve as a key field liaison to project managers, engineers, and client representatives
- Support junior team members with training, mentorship, and performance feedback
- Review schematics, drawings, and blueprints to ensure accurate execution
- Follow strict safety and PPE usage protocols due to noise, electrical hazards, and elevated work areas
Experience We’re Looking For:
- 10+ years of hands-on high-voltage substation experience
- Strong understanding of non-NEC structural and electrical work in substations
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting electrical schematics and blueprints
- Skilled in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook
Additional Requirements:
- Valid driver’s license
- High school diploma or GED
- Must successfully complete a background check and pre-employment/random drug tests
- Willing and able to travel 75% of the time with overnight stays as needed
- Must complete annual safety training (travel may be required)
- Requires good vision, hearing, and English proficiency for safe, effective communication in noisy environments
Bonus Points For:
- An associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Power Systems, or Mechanical Engineering
- NETA 2, 3, or 4 certification
- TWIC card
- Leadership on multi-site substation construction or retrofit projects
- Proficiency with hydraulic and high-voltage tooling
- Direct coordination experience with engineering QA/QC teams
- Background in mentoring and upskilling field crews
