Description

ESL teachers are language development specialists who support English Learners (ELs) in developing the academic language skills necessary to access rigorous grade-level curriculum and instruction. ESL teachers provide direct ESL instruction through a variety of service delivery models, including push-in, pull-out, co-teaching, and/or embedded ESL, while collaborating with educators and families to support equitable access for English Learners. ESL teachers also serve as a resource to schools regarding language acquisition, culturally responsive practices, instructional supports for ELs, and DESE compliance requirements related to English Learner programming.

Responsibilities

  • Provide standards-based ESL instruction aligned to the WIDA English Language Development Standards to support access to grade-level curriculum and instruction across content areas.
  • Deliver ESL instruction in accordance with district curriculum and approved service delivery models.
  • Support students in developing academic language proficiency across listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
  • Implement instructional practices that strengthen oral language, academic vocabulary, literacy development, comprehension, and written expression.
  • Promote equitable access to grade-level curriculum, instruction, assessments, and school-wide opportunities for English Learners.
  • Collaborate regularly with classroom teachers, special educators, reading specialists, counselors, administrators, related service providers, and other staff to support strong tiered instruction and student success.
  • Provide consultation regarding language acquisition, scaffolding, accommodations, culturally responsive practices, and language-based instructional supports for ELs, including Students with Limited or Interrupted Formal Education (SLIFE).
  • Participate in MTSS/problem-solving teams, Student Support Teams (SSTs), Student Support meetings, and IEP meetings as appropriate.
  • Support EL progress monitoring processes, including Student Success Plans (SSPs), Former English Learner (FEL) monitoring, support for students participating in ESL opt-out status as appropriate, and grading/report card responsibilities in accordance with district expectations and service models.
  • Use data, assessments, and student performance measures, including WIDA ACCESS results, to monitor progress and inform instruction.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with families regarding ESL programming, student progress, ACCESS/WIDA results, compliance notifications, and available supports and services, utilizing district translation and interpretation resources as needed.
  • Foster inclusive, culturally responsive learning environments and positive relationships with students and families that support engagement, belonging, and academic success.
  • Serve as a resource to school staff regarding EL programming, compliance requirements, WIDA expectations, and best practices for supporting English Learners.
  • Fulfill all professional responsibilities and obligations expected of Bedford Public Schools educators, including timely communication, collaboration, supervision, documentation, participation in meetings and professional learning, and adherence to district and school expectations.

Qualifications

  • Massachusetts ESL Teacher License (PreK�6 and/or 5�12) required or ability to obtain licensure.
  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • Experience working with English Learners in culturally and linguistically diverse settings preferred.
  • Knowledge of WIDA Standards, second language acquisition, sheltered instruction, culturally responsive instructional practices, and supports for SLIFE students preferred.
  • Additional licensure in a core academic content area (e.g., ELA, Mathematics, Science, History/Social Science, Special Education, or Reading) preferred.
  • Strong collaboration skills and the ability to support English Learners in accessing rigorous grade-level curriculum across content areas.
