
Free Store Assistant
Job Description
For over 70 years, Light of Life Rescue Mission has assisted people experiencing homelessness and poverty in the Pittsburgh area. We currently seek to fill the position of Free Store Assistant in our Community Outreach Center.
The Free Store Assistant supports the day-to-day operation of the Free Store at Light of Life's Outreach Center. This position requires a friendly person who can interact with a wide range of people. The Free Store Assistant must be caring and sympathetic, with a genuine interest in others. Team interaction and involvement are especially important, and there is a strong requirement for collaboration and building rapport with others.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Collaborate with staff, clients, and volunteers to make sure that the Free Store is kept stocked, organized, and cleaned.
- Document client information in a computer system.
- Assist the individuals who come in to shop by appointment: greeting them, doing a needs assessment, praying with them, helping them shop, and executing checkout procedures.
- Maintain a clean and sanitary work environment.
- Receive, sort, and organize donations.
- Pick up and deliver goods throughout the Pittsburgh area in a ministry vehicle.
- Helping with retrieving and delivering mail.
Due to the interface with the clients, all jobs at Light of Life require employees to:
- Participate in the ministry of Light of Life Rescue Mission and walk alongside clients sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with them through actions and words.
- Resolve all issues in ways that promote the principles of Light of Life while following the processes described in the Light of Life staff handbook.
- Practice effective stewardship of all resources.
- Embrace Light of Life's Statement of Faith and Values.
EDUCATION, LICENSURE, AND EXPERIENCE
- High school graduate or GED
- Competent user of computer and mobile computing device
- Retail sales experience, preferred
- ServSafe Certified or ability to obtain
- Strong organizational and interpersonal skills
- Willingness to pray for and love everyone who comes through our doors
- Driver's license with clean driving record
WORKING ENVRIONMENT & PHYSICAL FACTORS
This role operates in a dynamic, community-centered setting where flexibility, compassion, and a servant's heart are essential. Occasional evening or weekend hours may be required for special events. One must be able to lift 30 pounds and work on their feet for extended periods.
