Job Summary
Exciting opportunity to join the ConocoPhillips Australia Team as Senior HSE Advisor.Position Overview
ConocoPhillips’ Australian headquarters are located in Brisbane. Our focus is supplying Australian customers with natural gas and international customers with liquefied natural gas. We do this through our 47.5 percent interest in the Australia Pacific LNG joint venture, one of the largest producers of natural gas in eastern Australia. ConocoPhillips Australia also operates the Australia Pacific LNG liquefied natural gas facility near Gladstone. We are also an exploration company, with ongoing exploration occurring in the Bowen and Surat Basin in Central Queensland and new exploration in the Otway Basin along the southern coast of Australia to identify natural gas reserves for supply to Australian customers.
About the Role
Reporting to the HSE Operations Supervisor the Senior HSE Advisor provides expert health, safety and environmental advice and frontline assurance to the Curtis Island APLNG operations team. The role partners with operations, maintenance, projects, and major contractors to embed safe systems of work, drive continuous improvement in HSE performance, and ensure compliance with ConocoPhillips standards, APLNG requirements, and regulatory obligations.
Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Provide expert HSE advice and apply sound technical judgement to support operational decision-making.
Conduct health risk assessments, interpreting exposure monitoring results against Queensland Workplace Exposure Standards (WES) and recommending effective engineering, administrative and PPE controls in line with the hierarchy of control.
Analyse HSE performance data, exposure monitoring results and audit findings to identify trends, emerging risks and improvement opportunities, and communicate clear insights to operations, leadership and the broader business.
Lead and participate in HSE inspections, audits and assessments, verifying that corrective actions are effectively implemented, embedded in work practice, and sustainably closed.
Support induction, HSE training and competency frameworks, including onsite verification of competency in the field and accurate maintenance of training records.
Prepare clear, defensible advice, reports and briefing materials suitable for regulator review, workers' compensation matters, insurer scrutiny and legal proceedings.
Contribute to Risk Management processes by completing HSE assessments, identifying risks, and confirming controls are in place before work is executed.
Support emergency response planning, training and readiness, including participation in exercises and the implementation of lessons learned from drills and incidents.
Provide technical support to monitoring and compliance programs, including occupational hygiene, environmental and regulatory reporting activities as required.
Build effective relationships with the industry operators, regulators, and community stakeholders where relevant.
Mentor and develop HSE team members and lead or contribute to special projects, investigations and improvement initiatives as required.
You will bring to the role

Tertiary qualification or higher (Bachelor’s degree or higher) in Occupational Health & Safety, Engineering, Environmental Sciences or related discipline other relevant degree or foreign equivalent.
Minimum 8–10 years' HSE experience in oil & gas, LNG, petrochemical, or major hazard facility operations.
Demonstrated experience in an operating LNG, refinery, or upstream production environment.
Strong working knowledge of Queensland WHS and Environmental legislation.
Knowledge of HSE and Operations Management Systems with experience in implementing programs and procedures.
Strong technical skills in area of health, safety, and environmental management and emergency response.
Taproot Lead Investigator (or equivalent) certification and experience leading investigations.
Well-developed analytical and problem-solving skills with ability to collaboratively solve a broad range of complex problems.
Strong organisational skills with the ability to work independently, prioritise, meet commitments, and proactively manage time and generally manage heavy workloads while conducting multiple projects or priorities.
Ability to act as a recognised subject‑matter expert when engaging with Inspectors, regulators, legal and insurance representatives.
Influencing and coaching skills across all levels of the workforce.
Strong written and verbal communication, including incident reporting and briefings to leaders.
Preferred
Technical HSE certification (e.g., CSP, etc.) and/or membership accreditation to Health and Safety organizations (i.e., the Australian Institute of Health and Safety Professionals (AIHS) or similar (NEBOSH).,), etc.)
10+ years’ relevant onsite HSE experience in high‑risk industries (resources, energy, construction, manufacturing).
Experience with Major Hazard Facility regimes and Safety Case operations.
Process Safety Management exposure.
Familiarity with APLNG operating environment and Curtis Island regulatory context.
