Job Description

Under limited supervision, performs skilled-craft mechanical work at the journeyman level in maintaining, installing, repairing and troubleshooting of water/wastewater treatment and pumping facilities mechanical equipment and components. Work assignments are subject to established procedures, practices, or well-defined policies and are reviewed upon completion for technical soundness, appropriateness and adherence to methods, standards, and policies.  Work requires knowledge of the methods, practices and procedures for maintaining and repairing water/wastewater process equipment and a general knowledge of water/wastewater treatment and pumping operations.  Work is performed following established methods, practices, and procedures, which are substantially diversified and some latitude is permitted to consider and choose the most appropriate method, technique or procedure to follow. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, where there are some risks and hazards in handling materials such as chlorine, hydrogen peroxide or sulfur dioxide, but these are typically known, predictable and controllable. Solves complex problems within established parameters and identifies and recommends responses to new and unusually circumstances.  Contacts require courtesy, tact, and effectiveness in dealing with others to request or provide information, ask questions or obtain clarification.  Employees in this class may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays and rotating shifts.

  • Maintains, installs, repairs, and troubleshoots water/wastewater facilities mechanical equipment, such as but not limited to gas and diesel engines, heat exchangers, fans, valves, compressors, storage tanks, pumps of various types, overhead cranes and hoists.
    Inspects equipment to verify proper operation, identify problems and take corrective action where needed.
  • Operates and maintains equipment such as grinders, lathes, drill presses, pipe threading and welding machines, band saws, electrical testing equipment and other associated shop equipment.
  • Maintains water/wastewater pumping equipment maintenance records and reports.
  • Performs metal fabrication such as ironwork, sheet metal, burning and welding.
  • Performs preventative maintenance on all equipment.
  • Operates and maintains vehicle in accordance with company procedures and policies.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as: ¾ ton trucks, boom trucks, tractors, and other vehicles that may require up to a Class "A" CDL license.
  • Maintains equipment on a scheduled basis and troubleshoots to include distinguishing between electrical, control and mechanical malfunctions.
  • Utilizes computer programs related to the maintenance and communication functions.
  • Performs minor electrical maintenance functions.
  • Cleans and maintains process equipment.
  • May train and lead the work of others on certain jobs.
  • Operates standard office equipment and uses required software applications.
  • Performs other work-related tasks as required.
     

OPEN REQUIREMENTS
Must have a high school diploma or equivalent and four (4) years journeyman level experience in the installation, maintenance, repair and troubleshooting of process equipment of the type used in water/wastewater treatment facilities.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:  
A valid driver's license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this classification.

A valid Class "A" commercial driver's license may be required depending upon assignment and if required must be maintained during employment in this classification.

A valid American Welding Society Structural Welding Certificate may be required depending upon assignment and if required must be maintained during employment in this classification.

The starting hourly pay for this position is $44.17.

Unusual hearing or vision demands:

Free from color blindness; ability to maintain vision correctable to 20/40; normal field of vision; normal night vision; good depth perception. Distinguish colors on control panels for determining proper equipment operations.

 

Other physical demands or notes:

Normal sense of hearing and smell; perform work under noisy, dirty, high humidity, hot and cold conditions; have good manual dexterity; normal range of motion; normal sense of balance; JEA employees should not attempt to lift, pull or push a load in excess of 50lbs. without assistance.  Care should always be taken when lifting, pushing or pulling in an awkward position.  Some work may require the use of a respirator and incumbent should be able to perform with respirator apparatus without breathing difficulty. Climb ladders to heights up to 40 feet; stoop, bend and reach; work in confined spaces; and lift or move objects weighing 50 pounds or more.

This position requires that employees be in compliance with JEA procedure ES A0200 A0101 RS 628 Screening Personnel Risk Assessments (pre-hire for" FACTA" designations; pre-hire and recurring for "CIP" designations).
