Join Our Team as a Banquet Captain!
The JB Duke Hotel is seeking a talented and detail-oriented Banquet Captain to join our Food & Beverage team. This full-time, AM/PM position requires flexibility to work varying shifts and days each week.
As a Banquet Captain, you’ll lead and coordinate all aspects of assigned banquet functions—ensuring every event is executed to the highest standards of quality, service, and guest satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities
Before the Event

Review Banquet Event Orders (BEOs) and confirm assignments with the Banquet Manager.

Post daily BEOs, assign staff to specific event areas, and verify room setup and layout.

Coordinate with management and the culinary team to review head counts, dietary needs, menu details, timing, and any special instructions.

Inspect function rooms to ensure cleanliness, proper setup, and compliance with specifications.

Hold a pre-function meeting with staff at least 30 minutes prior to the event to review details, service standards, and VIP guests.

Ensure all rooms are fully prepared at least 15 minutes prior to start time.
During the Event

Greet the event contact and review all event details and timing for accuracy.

Supervise service staff to ensure smooth, professional service and guest satisfaction.

Communicate with the culinary team to ensure timely presentation of all courses.

Monitor event flow, service quality, and guest interactions throughout the function.
After the Event
-
Verify and complete guest billing, including liquor and beverage consumption reports.

Assign cleanup and reset duties to the service team, ensuring all storage areas, coolers, and supplies are organized and properly maintained.

Document rental inventory counts and condition.

Complete captain’s report, spreadsheets, and billing documentation for night audit.

Ensure all alcoholic beverages are secured and department keys are returned to the lockbox.
Additional Responsibilities

Arrive on time in proper uniform and adhere to all clock-in/out procedures.

Train and mentor new banquet staff as needed.

Comply with and enforce all hotel safety, fire, and security procedures.

Support and actively participate in hotel sustainability and recycling initiatives.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Banquet Management team.
Cash Bar Duties (When Applicable)

Retrieve and verify bank from the safe.

Issue cash and drink tickets to cashier and reconcile at event conclusion.

Collect all used drink tickets, count sales, verify against collected cash, and prepare deposits per hotel policy.

Complete required spreadsheets and deposit envelopes and return bank to the safe.
Qualifications

Minimum 1 year of experience as a banquet server; previous supervisory experience preferred.

Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.

Ability to prioritize, delegate, and manage multiple functions simultaneously.

Excellent attention to detail and time management.

Neat appearance and professional grooming standards.

Fluent in English (spoken and written); bilingual in Spanish is a plus.

High school diploma or equivalent required.
Physical Requirements

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds; frequent bending, lifting, and carrying up to 35 pounds.

Standing and walking for extended periods of time.

Ability to perform work involving ladders, reaching, and bending as needed.

Note: The JB Duke Hotel operates seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day. Holidays such as Christmas, New Year’s, Thanksgiving, and others are considered regular workdays. Business levels determine weekly hours. You may occasionally be asked to assist other departments as business needs arise.
Required Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent is required; a degree in hospitality management or a related field is preferred.
Required Experience:
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in event planning or hospitality services.
- Proven track record of successfully managing and leading event staff.
- Experience in coordinating with vendors and suppliers to ensure seamless event execution.
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Strong leadership and team management skills to effectively guide and motivate event staff.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with clients, vendors, and team members professionally.
- Ability to multitask and manage multiple events simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail.
- Strong problem-solving skills to address and resolve any issues that arise during events.
- Proficiency in event management software and tools to streamline event planning processes.
- Flexibility to work irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, as required by event schedules.
