Department of Public Safety Standards and Training 

DUII / Standardized Field Sobriety Test (SFST) Instructor (Public Safety Training Specialist 1) – multiple part time positions available 

This recruitment is for multiple, limited duration, part-time positions located in Salem, OR (4190 Aumsville Hwy SE), this position is not represented by a union. This recruitment will be used to establish a list of qualified applicants and may be used to fill future vacancies.  

What you will be doing:  

Instructors will be facilitating pre-designed coursework and/or activities. Creating and adapting personal delivery methods considering the context of public safety and the training curriculum.  Coach and evaluate course participants regarding their achievement of learning outcomes. Prepares, utilizes, and maintains training equipment. Ensures safety practices and protocols are followed. 

Skills Instructor’s offer instruction to students in various disciplines, however DUII and SFST Instructors primarily work with: 

• Basic Police Program 

• Regional Training Program

About DPSST: 

The Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST) oversees the development of professional standards and the delivery of quality training for law enforcement officers, corrections officers, parole and probation officers, firefighters, telecommunicators, and emergency medical dispatchers. DPSST is also the regulatory agency that enforces employment and training standards for the above listed public safety disciplines and licenses proprietary security managers, security contractors and officers, polygraph examiners, and private investigators.

Minimum Qualifications: 

Three (3) years of professional level experience related to the instructional assignment and/or based on ORS 181.610 through 181.690. Typically, this experience is in the area of public safety (law enforcement officers, adult and youth corrections officers, parole and probation officers, fire service professionals, telecommunicators, and emergency medical dispatchers). Experience must have included delivering structured training sessions or on-the-job training. 

For those interested in being considered for the SFST position must be an Oregon Standardized Field Sobriety Testing Instructor currently in good standing and/or be certified as a Drug Recognition Expert (DRE). This position will work in all aspects of the DUII/SFST program.

• Proven track record conducting effective, safe, and compliant DUII arrests. 

• Well versed in Standardized Field Sobriety Testing.  

• Application of instructional methods, training techniques and collaborative training activities. 

• Certification as a Standardized Field Sobriety Test Instructor and/or Drug Recognition Expert at time of application.
