Job Description
The Assayer works with other members of the Assay Department to inspect, sample, and test inbound material loads from suppliers as well as customers. At the same time, they will work with internal departments to inspect, sample, and test material in process, as well as ready for shipment.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Accurately identify various metallics (e.g. aluminum, copper, brass, zinc, stainless steel, lead, wire, iron, etc.) as well as identification of possible moisture contaminating sources
Perform scrap material visual inspections
Coordinate and communicate with receiving and purchasing departments
Communicate with scale operators
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
Mechanical Aptitude – Having the aptitude to understand and successfully operate machines or tools including eddy currents, scales, computers, forklifts and/or skid steers
Math – Capable of completing basic math skills; including the aptitude to weigh, record, total, and calculate percentages on test reports
Communication – Must be able to read, write legibly, and talk to others to convey information effectively
Active Listening – Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times
Visual Alertness/Attentiveness – Must be able to distinguish between colors and/or remain visually alert to surroundings in the department
Critical Thinking – Using logic and reasoning to identify strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems
Coordination – Adjusting actions in relation to others’ actions
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time in a hot or cold environment
Must be able to lift or move up to 40 pounds for various lengths of distances
Must be able to push or pull materials up to 75 pounds for various lengths of distance
Must be able to bend, stoop, crawl, squat, sit, balance, twist at the waist and neck, and/or crouch to perform work over the duration of the shift
Must be able to function in a loud, dusty, hot, cold, or humid environment for the duration of the shift.
