Job Description
Payment Architect – Payment Switch
Worldline NZ is undertaking one of the most significant technology transformations in our history — building a brand‑new payment switch to modernise our authorisation platform and power the next generation of payment experiences across New Zealand.
To make this programme succeed, we’re looking for a Payment Architect who truly understands how payments work from tap to settlement. This is a senior, domain‑expert role at the centre of a multi‑year national modernisation effort — shaping how transactions are routed, certified, cleared, and reconciled across the entire ecosystem.
If you’re someone who knows the difference between scheme rules in theory and scheme rules in the real world, this is your opportunity to define a platform that millions will rely on every day.
What you’ll lead
- End‑to‑end payment domain authority across the full transaction lifecycle
- Translation of payment requirements into switch design, routing logic, and platform configuration
- Design of settlement, clearing, reconciliation, interchange, and exception‑handling processes
- Definition of requirements for dual‑running, cutover strategy, and new‑to‑legacy switch interfaces
- Direct engagement with schemes, acquiring and issuing banks, and the switch vendor
- Payment-domain guidance on PCI‑DSS scoping, cardholder data flows, and payment‑specific controls
What you bring
- Deep, hands‑on expertise in payments: authorisation, clearing, settlement, reconciliation, and exception flows
- Practical experience with payment switches — configuration, routing, authorisation rules, message flows
- Strong understanding of scheme certification processes and what it takes to pass them efficiently
- Knowledge of ISO 8583 / ISO 20022, EMV standards, contactless flows, and scheme technical frameworks
- Experience designing or working within New Zealand’s payments ecosystem (strongly preferred)
- Ability to provide fast, well‑reasoned domain decisions in an agile delivery programme
- Clear communication skills — able to explain complex payment concepts to engineers, stakeholders, and executives
Why join us?
You will be the go-to person for all things payment architecture for the programme — the authority everyone turns to when defining how New Zealand transactions should work on the new switch. Your fingerprints will be on every routing rule, every certification test, every settlement file, and ultimately on the future of the country’s authorisation platform.
You’ll work closely with the Technical Lead and core engineering squads, have direct access to schemes and banks, and shape a platform that will define New Zealand’s payments landscape for the next decade and beyond.
