Job Description

Under routine supervision, conducts environmental compliance, fuels, and production sample analyses to assist in supporting the organization’s effort to excel in environmental stewardship. Job requires basic knowledge of federal, state and local government regulations and methods, techniques, safety practices and standard operating procedures, sufficient to perform routine technical tasks. Specific standard operating procedures are established requiring judgment in rearranging work sequences in specific cases. Identifies routine or recurring problems and selects solutions from defined alternatives. Completed work is reviewed for technical accuracy and completeness in following standard operating procedures. Regular contact with individuals in the same work group is required to obtain, clarify or provide facts and information. May be required to work a variety of non-standard hours and/or be on call twenty-four (24) hours-a-day, seven (7) days-a-week to provide continuous customer service.

 

 

  • Performs routine analyses for assigned work group (e.g. Gas Chromatograph (GC), Gas Chromatograph/Mass Spectrometer (GC/MS), Inductively Coupled Plasma (ICP,) etc.).
  • Prepares and maintains chemicals for analysis.
  • Maintains chemical inventory for work group.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance and simple troubleshooting of laboratory instruments for assigned work group.
  • Evaluates results from analyses and experiments using proper quality control techniques and reports findings.
  • Performs Method Detection Limit (MDL) studies and calculates recoveries and relative standard deviations for samples, spikes and controls.
  • Performs regulatory and non-regulatory blind and double blind proficiency testing studies to assess work quality and demonstrate capability to perform analysis for assigned work group.
  • Functions as a subject matter expert in designated department.
  • Develops new methods and writes standard operating procedures with guidance from a higher level.
  • May be required to operate a marine vessel/boat for specific assignments.
  • Trains Technicians or other Scientists on new methods.
  • Operates standard office equipment and uses required software applications, including Microsoft Office Suite and Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
  • Participates in making process improvements.
  • Performs other job-related work as assigned.

 

OPEN REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelors of Science degree in Chemistry, Biology, Natural Sciences or related field and a minimum of two (2) years laboratory experience.

~OR~

Six (6) year combination of education, training and experience that must include a minimum of two (2) years of laboratory experience and successful completion of twenty-four (24) semester hours of Chemistry, Biology, Natural Sciences or related field at college level.

 

LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:
A valid driver's license is required prior to employment and must be maintained during employment in this classification.
 

This position requires that employees be in compliance with JEA procedure ES A0200 A0101 RS 628 Screening Personnel Risk Assessments (pre-hire for “FACTA” designations; pre-hire and recurring for “CIP” designations).
