General Description:
The 1:1 Bus Assistant (Aide) for a Medically Fragile Student provides individualized support and supervision during transportation to and from the student's Therapeutic Day School placement. This position ensures the student's safety, health, and overall well-being while in transit, with a particular focus on monitoring medical needs, including conditions involving abnormal glucose levels.
The Bus Assistant implements the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) and Health Care Plan during transportation, responds appropriately to medical or behavioral needs, and maintains consistent communication with school staff and families. The role requires attentiveness, sound judgment, and the ability to respond effectively in emergency situations.
This position requires a high level of professionalism, confidentiality, and collaboration with district personnel, transportation staff, and caregivers to support the student's safe and consistent access to educational services. The Bus Assistant plays a critical role in ensuring safe, reliable, and medically appropriate transportation for the assigned student.
Minimum Required Qualifications:
To be considered for this position, the candidate must possess the following required education, certification, skills, experience and/or qualifications. Employees are responsible for obtaining/retaining the most current statutory and administrative rule requirements for their position.

o High school diploma or equivalent required
• Licensure:
o Paraprofessional Educator License (ELS-PARA)

• Experience:
o Experience working with children or individuals with medical or special needs preferred
• Knowledge/Abilities/Skills:
o Demonstrated understanding of students with medical conditions, particularly those involving abnormal glucose levels (e.g., diabetes)
o Ability to recognize signs of medical distress and respond in accordance with established care plans
o Strong communication and interpersonal skills
o Ability to follow directions and implement individualized student plans (IEP and Health Care Plan)
o Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism
o Dependability, punctuality, and consistent attendance
Desired Qualifications:
It is desired that the successful candidate for this position possesses the following skills, experience, and qualifications. These are desired qualifications only and are not required for employment.
• Prior experience as a bus aide, paraprofessional, or healthcare support staff
• CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
• Experience working with medically fragile students
• Bilingual (Spanish preferred)
Essential Duties and Responsibilities*:
Student Support and Safety
• Provide 1:1 supervision of the assigned student during transportation
• Ensure adherence to all district transportation safety rules and procedures
• Monitor the student's medical condition throughout the route, including awareness of symptoms related to abnormal glucose levels
• Implement and follow the student's IEP and Health Care Plan during transport
• Ensure safe loading and unloading of the student in coordination with the bus driver
Medical and Emergency Response
• Respond appropriately to medical concerns or emergencies in accordance with district protocols and the student's care plan
• Communicate any health-related concerns or incidents to appropriate personnel and caregivers
Communication and Collaboration
• Maintain effective communication with parents/guardians, school staff, and transportation personnel regarding the student's needs and well-being
• Work cooperatively with administrators, certified and non-certified staff, and families
Professional Expectations
• Demonstrate professionalism, ethical conduct, and respect in all interactions
• Maintain strict confidentiality regarding student and district information
• Exhibit regular and punctual attendance
• Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills
*Perform other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the school district.
Performance Evaluation/Accountability:
Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Proviso Township High Schools District 209 Board's policy on evaluation of personnel. All evaluations shall comply with State and Federal law.

Ability to work in a transportation environment, including riding a school bus and assisting students during loading and unloading, sitting, standing, light lifting, filing, operating office machines and computers, communicating with staff and others. Occasional lifting, otherwise non-demanding physical office activities.
The noise level in the work environment ranges from quiet/moderate to loud. The employee is frequently required to interact with the other staff. The employee is directly responsible for the safety and well-being of students.

Position Goals:
Annually the employee, in consultation with the supervisor, shall develop the employee's goals for the forthcoming year, which shall be set forth in the annual evaluation document. In the event that the employee and supervisor fail to agree on the goals to be included in said document, the supervisor shall establish the goals.
