Job Description

Summary: This position provides hands-on leadership to transform and elevate district-wide custodial operations through the development and implementation of effective systems for training, scheduling, monitoring, and performance tracking. The role is responsible for establishing and maintaining consistent custodial standards across all schools and district sites, ensuring high levels of cleanliness, safety, and operational excellence. This is an accountability-driven leadership position that requires a strong field presence, the ability to build and develop high-performing custodial teams, and a focus on creating sustainable systems that support staff success and measurable outcomes. The position is responsible for the hiring, assignments, training, supervision, and evaluation of all custodial staff across the district, ensuring consistent expectations, performance standards, and accountability at every site. This role emphasizes positive, solution-focused communication between site leaders and custodial teams to collaboratively address challenges and continuously improve facility conditions. The position also works closely with school and district leadership to align custodial operations with broader district and school goals, ensuring facilities support a safe, effective, and welcoming learning environment.

Essential Functions

  • Provide daily and weekly on-site leadership across all campuses or locations
  • Establish and maintain district-wide custodial expectations and standards
  • Ensure consistency across all schools�not just compliance, but excellence
  • Develop daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual cleaning checklists
  • Create inspection tools, accountability systems, and performance feedback
  • Standardize custodial procedures across all sites
  • Continuously improving efficiency and operational workflows
  • Supervise lead custodians and site teams
  • Build and consistently deliver effective ongoing training for custodians that meets high standards for cleaning, safety, chemical handling, and sanitation
  • Develop training and best practice for guidance for staff
  • Support performance improvement through coaching and clear expectations
  • Oversee sanitation and infection-control practices district-wide
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations and district protocols
  • Collaborate with site administrators to address concerns quickly and effectively
  • Conduct regular inspections and site audits
  • Monitor cleanliness quality, efficiency, and staff performance
  • Provide clear feedback and corrective action when needed
  • Report on outcomes and improvements to district leadership
  • Oversee custodial supply ordering, usage, and inventory control
  • Ensure cost-effective purchasing while maintaining quality standards
  • Monitor equipment needs and operational readiness

Equipment: Janitorial Carts, mops/buckets, vacuums, floor scrubbers, cleaning chemicals. Heavy-duty machines for waxing and stripping floors. Safety gear including but not limited to gloves goggles, tools for specialized tasks, like gym floor cleaners and buffers. 

Safety Requirements: Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures and regulations governing the proper use of tools and power equipment used in the performance of duties. Wear appropriate safety gear, including masks. Must comply with the school district's chemical hygiene program and follow MSDS sheets.

Travel Requirements: Limited travel to and from meetings or central office may be required

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.   • High school diploma or GED minimum.
  • 5+ years custodial, facilities, or operations experience
  • 2+ years supervisory or leadership experience
  • Strong ability to manage multiple sites or teams
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Preferred

  • Experience in a school district or large public facility environment
  • Background in training development or operational systems design
  • Strong communication and accountability leadership skills
  • Experience in cleaning standards, sanitation, or facilities operations
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) a plus 

 Clearances

  • Criminal Justice/Fingerprint Clearance.
  • Measles/Mumps/Rubella Immunity/Vaccination.
  • Valid I-9 form.

Working Environment: The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands; the employee is frequently required to sit, requires mobility for reaching filing and bending; must possess adequate hearing, oral and vision skill to perform daily functions of the job. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee may be required to travel. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Evaluation: Performance of this position will be evaluated annually by the Director of Support Services and/or the Assistant Superintendent for Administrative Services, in accordance with Governing Board Policy.

Terms of Employment

  • Lead District-Wide Custodial Operations Daily, evening work will be required.
  • Salary placement on the Classified Exempt Supports Staff Schedule as approved by the Governing Board
