Job Title: Certified Deaf Interpreter

Reports to: Director of Special Education
Primary Purpose: Interpret in sign language all communication that occurs in the classroom for students who are deaf or hard of hearing and require total communication. Assist the teacher in reverse interpreting comments, questions, or responses by these students. Work under the supervision of a teacher/team leader/ supervisor certified in education of the deaf and/or hard of hearing.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
High school diploma or GED
Valid certification as interpreter granted by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf or Texas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Must be 18 years of age
Ability to interpret in an educational setting
Ability in or willingness to learn SEE2 sign system
Knowledge of interpreter role and Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Code of Professional Conduct
Ability to communicate effectively
Ability to work with hearing impaired students
Ability to read and interpret documents
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence
Ability to speak effectively to groups
Knowledge of general office equipment
Experience:
Some experience working with children
Prior experience interpreting in sign language
Working Conditions
Maintain emotional control under stress.
Intra-district and/or inter-district travel as required.
Mild to moderate lifting as required of students and/or equipment and materials.
Ride school buses to accompany and/or assist students as needed.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Support
- Interpret and/or reverse interpreting in educational settings including classrooms, co-curricular programs and meetings, activities, school-related conferences, staff development, and other situations.
- Work with individual students or small groups to communicate in the classroom.
- Provide assistance to substitute teachers.
- Attend and interpret Admission, Review, and Dismissal (ARD) Committee meetings as needed.
- Instruct hearing impaired students under the direction of classroom teacher
- Help maintain administrative records and prepare required reports.
Student Management
Help manage student behavior. This includes intervening in crisis situations.
Assume responsibility for learning and adapting to each student’s communication needs.
Keep teachers informed of special needs or problems of assigned students.
Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and state and local board policy.
Other - Comply with state and federal mandates as they pertain to the delivery of special education services. Ensure the confidentiality of student identification and educational records in accordance with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Participate in professional development programs, faculty meetings, and special events as assigned.
- Assist in maintaining a new and orderly classroom.
- Assist in inventory, care and maintenance of equipment.
- Follow all rules, regulations and policies of Greenville ISD and follow directives of superiors.
- Follow attendance policy as assigned by the supervisor.
Supervisory Responsibilities: None
Equipment Used: Copier, personal computer, audio visual equipment including captioning equipment, and TDD or Texas Relay.
