
Social Worker - Part Time
Job Description
Position Purpose
- Under the general supervision of the Director of Student Services, to provide students, parents, administrators, and other teaching staff with individually-tailored recommendations and services to overcome personal, emotional, familial, or social issues to maximize the students' learning experience.
Essential Functions
- Provides academic services with students and parents to encourage parental understanding of, and participation in, overcoming issues to maximize the educational experience of the student.
- Encourages parental involvement in students' education and ensures effective communication with students and parents.
- Assists with the school district's dropout prevention efforts.
- Conducts home visits to involve parents in their child's academic success and to help families find appropriate resources.
- Counsels parents and students on discipline, attendance, academics, communication, alcohol, drugs, divorce, mental illness, health, hygiene, homelessness and other issues as needs arise.
- Consults, refers, and coordinates with local agencies, organizations and institutions, including state and federal authorities as needed.
- Assists with the collection and acquisition of tangible resources for families.
- Provides attendance interventions with students and parents and refers them to court when appropriate.
- Represents the school system at Juvenile and State Court for truancy and deprivation cases involving students and families.
- Consults and assists school staff on child abuse and neglect referrals.
- Assists schools, students and staff with crisis situations.
- Assists and provides in-service training for child abuse and neglect, homelessness, crisis, attendance, suicide and other areas as needed.
- Initiates program and resource development in the school system and community.
- Collaborates with school district on system wide policies, procedures, laws and data collection issues affecting student success and legal requirements.
- Gathers, shares and updates resource information beneficial to children and families with school counselors.
- Acts as the school district liaison for legally required state protocol committees (Child Abuse, Attendance, Child Fatality, and Suicide) along with other county committees and task forces as needed.
- Continues to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the education and social work field by attending conferences, workshops or professional meetings, and by maintaining professional relationships.
- Organizes and maintains a system for accurate and complete record-keeping and providing student information to outside agencies as required by district procedures and applicable laws.
Additional Duties
- Performs other related tasks as assigned by the Director and other central office administrators as designated by the Superintendent.

Equipment
- Uses standard office equipment such as personal computers, printer, copy and fax machines, and telephone.
Travel Requirements
- Travels to school district buildings, homes of students, agencies and professional meetings as needed.
Skills, Knowledge, Abilities
- Knowledge of Social Work principles and theories.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
- Ability to use computer network system and software applications as needed.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, staff and outside agencies.
Physical and Mental Demands, Work Hazards
- Works in standard office and school building environments.
Qualifications Profile
Certification:
- Holds a Georgia State Certification as a School Social Worker or meets the education requirements allowing certification eligibility.
- Motor Vehicle Operator's License or ability to provide own transportation.
Education:
- Bachelors from an accredited college or university in a discipline applicable to social work.
- Masters Degree in Social Work or have completed a state approved school social work certification program at the masters level.
Experience:
- Successful social work experience with children and families.
- School experience is desirable but not required.
