Job Description

TITLE COUNSELOR 6-8 (Guidance Teacher)
 
QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Minimum master's degree
  2. Valid teacher license with appropriate endorsement
  3. Administrative or supervisory experience
  4. Meets health and physical requirements

 
JOB GOAL
To help students overcome problems that impede learning and to assist them in making educational, occupational, and life plans
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 

  1. Assists the principal in registering students new to the school and orients them to school procedures
  2. Aids students in course and subject selections
  3. Maintains student records and protects their confidentiality
  4. Requests and sends student records
  5. Confers with principal, teachers, school psychologists, speech teachers, etc. concerning students
  6. Organizes and conducts parent conferences
  7. Conducts individual, large, and small group counseling sessions
  8. Serves as a member of M-Team and Disciplinary Hearing Authority Team when necessary
  9. Arranges for tutors and summer school work
  10. Serves as building administrator for achievement testing program
  11. Plans and chaperones school field trips
  12. Attends guidance seminars, conferences, and workshops
  13. Helps students evaluate career interests and choices
  14. Helps organize and conduct annual "Career Day"
  15. Works with students on an individual basis in the solution of personal problems related such issues as home and family relations, health, and emotional adjustment
  16. Provides counseling to students who are referred as having problems in attendance, retention, discipline, and pre-delinquency
  17. Administers MICRO-Info Computer Program for all eighth grade students
  18. Interprets the guidance program to the community
  19. Provides inservice training in guidance for teachers and student teachers
  20. Coordinates funds for students that may be in need of indigent services
  21. Assists in the orientation of new faculty members
  22. Works with Life Skills program in securing students for groups
  23. Works with high school counselors on registration for all incoming ninth graders
  24. Provides information and transportation for pregnancy screening for students
  25. Plans and coordinates guest speakers and instructors and speaks to community groups
  26. Coordinates Summer Youth Employment and Training Program (JTPA)
  27. Performs other duties as assigned

 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This job may require lifting of objects that exceed 25 lbs., with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 10 lbs. Other physical demands that may be required are as follows:

  2. Verbal: Ability to understand meanings of words and ideas associated with then
  3. Numerical: Ability to perform arithmetic operations quickly and accurately
  4. Data Perception: Ability to understand and interpret information that may be presented in the form of graphs, charts, or tables

  1. 200-day contract
  2. Teacher salary scale
