PAY SCALE: $46,500 - $66,500/Year (by FTE), Based on Education and Experience
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Special Education Teacher is responsible for developing and implementing an instructional program designed to meet the individual academic, functional, social-emotional, and behavioral needs of students with disabilities, enabling access to the curriculum and participation in school and transition-related programs across preschool through post-secondary age levels.
TYPICAL DUTIES:
- Develop, implement, and monitor instructional programs aligned with New York State standards and individualized student needs
- Design and deliver instruction in accordance with students' Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
- Develop, implement, and document IEP goals, accommodations, modifications, and progress monitoring
- Utilize instructional strategies that support academic, functional, and transition-related skill development, as appropriate to student age and program
- Establish and maintain classroom routines, behavior supports, and learning environments that promote student engagement and safety
- Collaborate with related service providers, mental health staff, and instructional support staff to address student needs
- Supervise and direct the work of paraprofessionals and classroom support staff
- Communicate regularly with parents/guardians, administrators, and team members regarding student progress and needs
- Participate in CSE/CPSE meetings, team meetings, faculty meetings, annual reviews, and other meetings as required
- Maintain accurate and timely records, including lesson plans, attendance, progress reports, and required documentation
- Support inclusion, community-based instruction, and transition activities, when applicable
- Perform other duties as assigned by Exceptional Children Administration
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of special education laws, regulations, and best practices
- Ability to differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning, behavioral, and developmental needs
- Ability to collaborate effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Strong communication, organization, and classroom management skills
- Familiarity with assistive technology and instructional supports, as appropriate
QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience: Prior experience working with students with disabilities preferred; experience across varied instructional levels and student needs preferred
Education: Valid New York State Certification in Special Education (appropriate grade level, content area, Students with Disabilities certification)
