POSITION TITLE: SCHOOL BUS MECHANIC

LOCATION: Transportation Department / District 25 Education Center

POSTING DATE: April 17, 2026

CLOSING DATE: For best consideration, please apply by April 24, 2026. However, position will be open until filled.

ADDITIONAL INFO: 40 hours per week

DAYS: 12 month employment

SALARY SCHEDULE: Rate of pay will be $22.90 per hour

START DATE: June 1, 2026

JOB SUMMARY:

Applicants are required to have a thorough knowledge and the ability to troubleshoot and repair various diesel and gas engine systems including all electrical, fuel, drive train, body components and be able to weld and fabricate. Must be able to certify to drive school bus as needed.

Mechanics interact with approximately 100 bus drivers along with other district personnel so it is imperative to have excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with people that have a much lower understanding of mechanical systems. Has to be dependable and willing to be on call and work very early and extra hours as necessary. Safety is a primary concern and has to be practiced throughout the duration of each work day. The work is performed under the general supervision of the lead mechanic with latitude granted for the exercise of discretionary judgment to determine the best method of repair of vehicles and equipment. The principal duties of this class are performed in a mechanical shop environment where work requires heavy lifting, working with a welder, torch and other mechanical equipment, chemical and solvents, may involve related hazards. Incumbent is often exposed to cold, heat, noise and dirt. Required to pass a Department of Transportation physical. Required to pass an initial drug and alcohol screening and all random tests thereafter. Must be able to obtain a Commercial Drivers license and school bus certification within 60 days of employment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (will vary by assignment)

* Performs annual and 60 days state inspection on all district school buses;

* Isolate and repair malfunctions in vehicles and equipment;

* Perform preventative maintenance on all district vehicles and mechanical equipment;

* Address driver concerns regarding the operation and condition of their vehicles;

* Perform body work repairs:

* Welding and fabrication:

* Clean, maintain, organize and stock shop;

* Perform all work duties/activities in accordance with District policies, procedures and safety practices.

 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Must have a high school diploma or the equivalent.

One and one half (1 1/2) years experience in diesel or gasoline mechanics; or

Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform as an effective and competent school bus mechanic.

Medical, Dental, Vision, Life Insurance and Public Employee's Retirement are available to Classified employees who work at least half time (20 hours per week) or more in a regular position. This position is eligible for full time benefits.
