Job Description
C.E. King Middle School, in growing Sheldon ISD in northeast Houston, that feeds 6A C.E. King High School, is looking for a full-time Art Teacher to join our teacher team for the 2026-2027 school year. Sheldon ISD is a Texas Art Education Association "District of Distinction," and our Art students participate in the Houston Rodeo Art Program, VASE/JrVASE, Youth Art Month, Big Art Day, and other local and state art events. We are looking for engaging, energetic, organized, and pedagogically strong art educators, who can provide student-centered instruction and make a positive impact in students' lives. Ideal candidates would already have Art EC-12 Texas teaching certification, but degreed alternative certification program candidates can apply. Candidates should have demonstrated proficiency (either themselves as artists and/or in their students as teachers) in the basics of 2D and 3D art, but experience in other art genres, such as Crafting or Digital Art, would be welcomed.
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Planning and Delivery
- Develop and implement lesson plans that fulfill the requirements of the district's curriculum and align with TEKS for Visual Arts.
- Teach students the elements and principles of design, art techniques, art history, and appreciation of various cultures and styles.
- Incorporate a variety of media, including drawing, painting, sculpture, digital art, and mixed media.
- Use instructional strategies that actively engage students and foster creativity, expression, and critical thinking.
- Adapt instruction to meet the diverse needs of learners, including students receiving special education services and English language learners.
Classroom Management and Environment
- Create a positive, structured, and inclusive classroom culture that encourages artistic risk-taking and respect for others' work.
- Manage student behavior in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct and campus policies.
- Organize and maintain an orderly and safe classroom and art materials.
- Promote proper care of materials, tools, and classroom equipment.
Assessment and Progress Monitoring
- Use a variety of assessment tools to evaluate student progress and provide feedback that supports growth and skill development.
- Maintain accurate records of student grades, portfolios, participation, and progress.
- Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student achievement and behavior.
Campus and Community Engagement
- Display student artwork throughout the school and participate in campus events, exhibitions, and district art shows.
- Collaborate with other teachers, staff, and administrators to support schoolwide goals and interdisciplinary learning opportunities.
- Support student participation in local, regional, or state art competitions when applicable.
- Attend staff meetings, professional development sessions, and actively engage in campus culture.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in Art Education or a related field
- Valid Texas Teaching Certificate with Art EC�12 or 4�8 certification
Experience:
- Successful completion of student teaching or one or more years of classroom teaching experience preferred
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of art history, media, tools, and instructional techniques appropriate for middle school learners
- Ability to effectively manage a classroom and maintain student engagement
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills
- Commitment to fostering a culturally responsive and inclusive learning environment
- Ability to integrate technology into instruction and student projects
*Salary is commensurate with experience
*Minimum Salary $66,000 for fully certified teachers
* Please note that this role requires in-person attendance and is not eligible for remote work.
