Sign-on Compensation after 90 days of employment.

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Bus Attendant / Aide 
 

I. General Description: 

To provide assistance to the bus driver in providing safe transportation for all Exceptional Students to and from home to school. This work requires the bus attendant to be punctual, alert and observant of the designated route and all students.

 

II.  Qualifications:

1. Must have a High School diploma. 

2. Must be able to demonstrate proficient writing skills. 

3. Must be able to verbally communicate with students. 

4. Must be able to push, pull, or lift weights up to 50 pounds.

 

III. Duties and Responsibilities 

  1. The bus attendant is responsible for student safety while they are boarding, riding and unloading the school bus. You need to alert and ensure all students are following the safety rules of the bus.
  2. Respond to in a customer friendly manner to the student's questions, request and concerns.
  3. The bus attendants should assist the driver with students boarding and departure from the bus.
  4. Bus attendants should get up and help all students maneuver the stairwell on the bus.
  5. Encourage students to be independent and responsible as much as possible.
  6. Assist any student maneuver the stairwell when they get off the school bus.
  7. Work as a team with the bus driver to load and unload students in wheelchairs from the lift. Make sure the student is securely tied down.
  8. When securing the wheelchair in the back of the bus, be sure to observe other students on the bus.
  9. Ask the bus driver to teach you how to secure students in safety restraints systems.
  10. Help keep your bus clean by washing windows, mopping, dusting and sweeping. If student has an accident please make sure to wear proper protection and use sterilizing cleaners.
  11. Your job is to make sure all students are safe.
  12. Do not manage students by using fear, threats or make unreasonable demands. If a student is misbehaving report it to the bus driver.
  13. Maintain records student's behavior on the bus.
  14. Your job is to manage students so the bus driver is not distracted while driving.
  15. Be alert and redirect students when needed.
  16. Bus attendants need to be trained on how to evacuate students from the bus.
  17. Bus attendants should be trained on how to manually work the wheelchair lift.
  18. Bus attendants may be asked to walk with students to the office or classroom. The bus attendant should not leave the bus unless the driver instructs them to.
  19. No drinking or eating with students on the bus.
