Summary

Under the supervision of the Director-Facilities Services, the General Maintenance Worker sees to the general maintenance of buildings and equipment based on set schedules or in response to emergencies.


The incumbent performs maintenance, construction and renovation work according to assigned tasks while respecting health and safety standards and regulations. They ensure the safety of the University premises, facilities and property at all times.

 

Key Responsibilities

  1. CONSTRUCTION, RENOVATIONS AND MAINTENANCE OF BUILDINGS 
  • Build, demolish, repair and renovate walls, ceilings and floors;
  • Paint indoors and outdoors; 
  • Check, repair and install individual air conditioners;
  • Repair washing machines, dryers, refrigerators and other electro-mechanical appliances, as far as he or she is able; 
  • Do minor plumbing repairs (maintenance of taps and pipes for drinking water and waste water), welding, electricity (testing and replacement of electrical outlets, electrical wiring, transformers, lights and related components);
  • Check and repair equipment and appliances related to the ventilation and heating systems, in collaboration with the stationary engineer;
  • Replace light bulbs and fluorescent tubes, as needed;
  • Move equipment and furniture according to the needs of the Faculties and services;
  • Change and modify cylinders and keys based on needs communicated by the person responsible for key services;
  • Purchase materials (do errands) authorized by the supervisor as needed. 
  • Perform other tasks related to these duties.


  1. OUTDOOR MAINTENANCE 
  • In winter, clear the snow from sidewalks, parking lots and steps, and spread salt and sand on them.
  • Turn on / turn off outdoor taps and water supplies when the seasons change.
  • Check and ensure the upkeep of roofs and skylights. Repair as needed.
  • Maintain outdoor furniture as needed and put it away at the end of the summer.
  • Check and ensure the upkeep of outdoor electrical outlets as needed.
  • Perform other tasks related to these duties.


Education, Experience, Knowledge and Abilities

  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Demonstrated experience in one or more disciplines in the area of construction/renovation;
  • Have experience in handling and using various tools needed to carry out tasks: stationary machinery, tractor, lawnmower, hand, mechanical and electrical tools;
  • General driver’s licence (Class G);
  • Understanding of metric and imperial measurements;
  • Knowledge of health and safety standards and regulations;
  • Bilingualism in both official languages;
  • Good physical capabilities;
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively; 
  • Ability to work as part of a team;
  • Initiative, autonomy;
  • Time management skills and ability to set priorities;
  • Customer service skills;
  • Availability to work overtime depending on the needs of Facilities Services.
