Summary
The Utilities Technician will perform preventative and predictive maintenance on all Process Refrigeration, HVAC, Boilers, and Compressed Air equipment. They will monitor and operate the Boilers and associated equipment along with the Ammonia compressors, Condensers and Air compressors. Also, assists with Employee Participation Guidelines of the PSM Program for the operating facility.
Responsibilities
- Maintains and operates ammonia compressors, condensers, fans, pumps, evaporators, heat exchangers
- Understands and follows safe practices for ammonia and Freon refrigeration equipment
- Install, repair, tear down, and rebuild system components on all phases of refrigeration and heating systems in the plant
- Evacuate all or any part of the ammonia refrigeration systems
- Observe and test system operation, using gauges and instruments
- Understand component controls and overall control of the system
- Test lines, components, and connections for leaks
- Adjust or replace worn or defective mechanisms and parts and reassemble repaired systems
- Adjust valves according to specifications and charge system with proper type of refrigerant by pumping the specified gas or fluid into the system
- Install wiring to connect components to an electric power source
- Perform mechanical overhauls
- Cut, bend, thread, and connect pipe and tubing
- Keep records of repairs and replacements made and causes of malfunctions
- Use/update SOPs, drawing mark-ups and logbooks to communicate across shifts
- Knowledge of process safety management system and regulations, boiler and condensate systems, and compressed air systems
Requirements
- 3-5 years of experience working in a manufacturing environment is preferred
- Maintain steam supply system including manual and automated valves, heat exchanger, and condensate traps
- Maintain and operate high pressure boilers and feed water
- Service traps and water feed for boilers and heat exchangers
- Evaluate all parts of the steam or condensate systems and adjust as needed
- Dismantle and repair any malfunctioning components associated with the boiler systems
- Take water tests and maintain chemical levels in the water systems and adjust as necessary
- Communicate and work effectively in a team.
- Ability to read & write the English language
- Maintain basic electrical safety, ammonia properties, safety, & health hazards, PPE requirements

- Refrigeration Cycle: Overview of the Process including PSI
- Safety Systems and their functions
- Normal Operating Parameters & Deviation Response
- Compressor, Condenser, Evaporator, Vessel, Pump, Purger & Control Computer operation
- SOP/SMP awareness including the requirement to follow written procedures
- SOP 101-Overall System Operation, which includes emergency and normal refrigeration system operation procedures
- SOP The System Walkthrough Procedure
- Ammonia Leak Investigation and the EAP/ERP including their individual role in the emergency action/response plan, including a review of the any recent or routinely recurring incidents
- RETA Book 1 Test completion
