REQUIREMENTS:
Education Level:
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing and a valid South Dakota Registered Nurse license.
Experience Desired:
One to three years' experience in the health care field, preferably pediatrics and/or community health.
Other Requirements:
Physical ability to assess vision, hearing, carry equipment and perform CPR. Demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills. Must be able to provide physical assessment and CPR training. Patience and a positive attitude toward people is essential. Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality in all work assignments. Positive human relations skills.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to lift 35 to 50 pounds intermittently during an eight hour day. Requires constant hearing, hand-eye and mind-eye coordination; intermittent speaking and walking. Requires frequent keyboarding, repetitive motions with the wrists, hands, and fingers. Standing, turning, and stooping are required. A valid South Dakota drivers license and the ability to drive a car.
Clearance:
Employment is contingent upon a Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance, paid for by the applicant.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
- Obtain and review immunization records to ensure that all students are in compliance with South Dakota State Law.
- Assist with Health Fairs (Grade K-5), & Preschool screening program.
- Screen students vision and hearing as referred.
- Assess and manage illnesses and accidents of students.
- Promote school district staff wellness.
- Review health status of students and staff with identified health problems and refer when necessary.
- Report health conditions to parents/guardians and provide health counseling.
- Follow up on medical recommendations for students and report to teachers and appropriate school personnel.
- Attend Student Assistant Team meeting upon request.
- Present health programs for classrooms throughout the school district.
- Provide health education for school district staff and serve as a resource speaker: first aid, asthma, diabetes, seizures, medication administration, CPR, blood and body fluid guidelines, allergic reactions.
- Assist in teaching CPR classes for students and staff.
- Central High School Nurse will assist Director of Athletics with recording and storage of Sports Physical Exams and history for Middle School through Varsity athletes. Monitor health conditions, follow up on medical recommendations with the parent(s) and appropriate school personnel.
- Assist with coordination and implementation of sports physical exam clinics done at Central High School.
- Participate in home visits to assess family's needs as related to child's health.
- Assist with scoliosis education and screening for grades 5 through 9 and make referrals.
- Serve as a liaison between parent, school, and community in health matters.
- Act as a resource person in promoting health careers. Compile and maintain a file of health education material including a list of school and community resources.
- Participate in health education directly and indirectly for the improvement of health by teaching students to become more assertive health consumers and to assume greater responsibility for their own health.
- Administer medications and medical treatments as necessary. Assist in teaching the Medication Administration class for non-licensed assistive personnel. Supervise non-licensed trained school personnel in medication administration.
- Promote and assist in the control of communicable diseases through preventive immunization programs, early detection, surveillance, and reporting of contagious diseases.
- Participate in ongoing professional growth.
