Job Description
DIRECTOR OF TRANSPORTATION
SALARY: $103,589 - $123,736 yearly, based on experience and the 2026-2027 Miscellaneous Salary Schedule
HOURS: 8 hours/day, Monday--Friday, 20 Paid Vacation Days, 13 Paid Holidays, 228 Paid Work Days, 261 Total Paid Days
Position: Director of Transportation
Contract: Per Miscellaneous Schedule
Immediate Supervisor: Executive Director of Business Operations
Primary Evaluator for the following positions: Bus Drivers, Bus Aides, Routing Specialist
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school graduate.
- Five (5) or more years of related transportation management experience including supervisory responsibilities.
- School district experience is highly desirable.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
Plan, organize, control and direct transportation operations and activities to assure safe, efficient and timely student transportation to and from school; direct the scheduling of pupil transportation to and from school, sports events, and field trips, assure proper development arrangement and adjustment of bus routes and stops to meet student needs, supervise and evaluate the performance of assigned personnel.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Monitors district compliance with Federal and state regulations, commercial driver's license (CDL) requirements, insurance requirements and district standards relating to pupil transportation; initiates corrective action as needed.
- Establishes and implements a system to monitor bus driver compliance with district policies and accurately track the operating efficiencies of individual drivers; initiates corrective action as needed.
- Works with district administrators, staff, parents and others in matters relating to pupil transportation as well as particular concerns; effectively communicates district policies and procedures.
- Manages the execution of random drug testing.
- Prepares or oversees completion of required documentation and reports.
- Manages the maintenance of departmental records, databases and files.
- Maintains current knowledge of regulatory standards and school policies related to the student transportation function including Department of Transportation, Ohio Department of Education and CDL requirements. Recommends and implements changes to methods and processes as necessary.
- Conduct annual evaluations of transportation staff.
- Operates software programs used in the transportation department including Excel, Word, Google Docs, and Versatrans.
- Design, plan and facilitate mandatory in-service training for drivers, bus aides, etc.
- Ensures departmental staff maintains required credentials and facilitates on-going development opportunities that align with district strategies and objectives.
- Performs the duties of the Director of Transportation as directed.
- Performs all other duties assigned by the Executive Director of Business Operations or Superintendent.
