VPU Context : The Development Economics Vice Presidency (DEC) is the World Bank’s central reservoir of fresh insights into the most pressing challenges of development. It is led by the Chief Economist and Senior Vice President of the World Bank Group, who advises the President and senior managers, serves as the community leader for the WBG’s economists, and helps to keep the institution in the forefront of thinking about development policy. DEC constitutes one of the world’s largest teams of economists focused on policy solutions for developing economies. Position Background: The World Development Report (WDR), published annually since 1978, is the World Bank’s flagship report. Each WDR is focused on a particular theme that is central to development and provides in-depth analysis and policy recommendations on that theme. Past reports have considered topics including agriculture, youth, equity, public services delivery, the role of the state, transition economies, labor, infrastructure, health, the environment, risk management, and poverty. WDR’s are sponsored by the Development Economics Vice-Presidency and are overseen by the Chief Economist of the World Bank Group. The WDR team is seeking to hire an Extended-Term Consultant who would serve as the Task Team Leader of World Development Report 2027, working closely with the WDR Director to oversee the preparation of the report. Duties and accountabilities: The ET Consultant - Task Team Leader is expected to assist the WDR Director in the preparation and implementation of the WDR report. Specifically, the selected candidate will: • Provide strategic guidance to report director(s), including on stakeholder engagement and on the World Bank’s processes as they relate to the WDR. • Oversee the hiring of all consultants and staff (including staff providing cross-support from other parts of the WBG). • Oversee and track the budget for each WDR. • Oversee and keep track of all internal and external stakeholder engagements and consultations. • Organize Bankwide review meetings and prepare all required documentation. • Organize and oversee all engagements with Executive Directors and the Board Secretariat, including organizing the informal Board meetings with the Board of Executive Directors. • Prepare all relevant briefing materials, talking points, presentations, and requests for information, including for the report directors, the Chief Economist, the Senior Managing Director for Development and Policy (for Board meetings), and other members of senior management, as required. • Manage the entire production process of the WDR, including the editing, report design, translations, printing, etc. • Oversee the implementation and upkeep of the WDR website. • Organize and track all dissemination events once the report is launched.
