The World Bank Group (WBG) is the world’s largest source of multilateral funding and knowledge for development solutions. The World Bank Group Controllers is responsible for all aspects of the financial reporting and the internal control framework for the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), the International Development Association (IDA), International Finance Corporation (IFC), and Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency (MIGA), and the extensive Trust Fund/Partnership portfolio of these entities. We also lead the shared services function for the WBG corporate expenses and WBG trust funds and have fiduciary responsibility for all disbursements related to WBG operations. Our three departments perform the work and provide all these services interacting with a broad range of stakeholders. The Controllers is seeking exceptional students who are looking for an opportunity to experience the finance and accounting function of the largest global multilateral financial institution and to develop a range of skills across the finance and accounting spectrum. You will be working in a highly multicultural environment with accounting and finance professionals from around the world and will get to see firsthand how funds flow to development. The final quarter of our fiscal year, which ends on June 30th, is especially busy for all units across the Controllership with year-end financial statement preparation and audit related activities, finalizing various initiatives and wrapping up program activities, and providing increased client and stakeholder support and advisory services across a range of services. This makes the summer months a busy season with many opportunities to see the culmination of the year’s efforts for the financial cycle. We are looking for summer interns to work with our seasoned finance and accounting professionals on activities that that will cover one of the following tasks: Accounting Policy Team • Assist with research and analysis to support interpretation and application of professional/ authoritative pronouncements, such as statements issued by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), to complex business issues to facilitate advisory services on new financial product development and provide solutions to complex issues arising in the current financial product portfolio. • Assist with the formulation of guidance to stakeholders to ensure that the recording of revenue, expenses, asset/liability recognition and measurement, and required disclosures are compliant with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). • Assist with reviewing financial statement disclosures for compliance with US GAAP. Accounts Payables, Quality Assurance and Travel Accounting Team • Help in designing and operationalizing AI/ML based audit tool for review of WBG’s administrative expenses, including data preparation, validation, and interpretation of flagged items. • Collaborate with Financial Officers responsible for quality assurance and data scientists to enhance audit methodologies that integrate predictive analytics and automation. • Help build and refine dashboards that visualize audit outcomes, risk scores, and compliance metrics and effective outreach • Prepare summary reports and visual presentations of audit insights for internal stakeholders, contributing to knowledge sharing and process improvement. Accounts Receivables, Payroll and Tax Team • Work closely with a team of accounting professionals on the recording of revenue, expenses, asset/liability recognition and measurement, and required disclosures under US GAAP. • Support and evaluate ERP test results for alignment with business outcomes and support cloud migration by validating data quality, privacy, metadata, and lineage to improve future testing strategies. Client Services, Trust Funds and Loan Operations Team • Collaborate with Finance Analysts in setting up the loan master data in the loan system for newly signed loan agreements. • Assist in the development of analytical reports and dashboards pertaining to loans and disbursements, as required. • Assist in providing guidance and support to new users in navigating and utilizing the FundsChain platform effectively. Corporate Reporting and Analysis Team • Work with subject matter experts to design, develop, and provide analytical reports on assigned financial accounting, reporting, and auditing topics. • Perform data analysis on loans, debt, investments, disbursements and trust fund datasets to support various corporate information requests. • Prepare presentations on research findings and contribute to content creation for various communication material, knowledge repositories and knowledge products on assigned financial accounting, reporting and auditing topics. Loan Accounting Team • Work closely with Financial Officers on an international portfolio for developing countries, updating and/or reconciling loans/grants information in accounts in assigned portfolios. Solutions and Transformation Team (AI Data Focus) • Support ongoing initiatives on Data Science, Generative AI, and low/no-code automation tools through testing, building models, data preparation, analysis, visualizations, business analysis, progress tracking, and coordination. Structured Finance Team • Assist with identifying and documenting trends and key drivers of the financial results in the context of understanding market movements (interest rate, foreign exchange rate, etc.). Sustainability Reporting Team • Perform research on sustainability reporting related topics. • Support the production of the annual Climate-related Disclosures with subject matter experts. • Support the production of newsletters and presentations.
