The Mental Health Therapist or Staff Psychologist, College of Osteopathic Medicine, is part of a Counseling Center team of mental health professionals dedicated to providing confidential, accessible, and culturally responsive mental health services to UNC students. Team members tailor interventions to clients' individual strengths and needs. The position is the primary position responsible for assessing and responding to the mental health needs of COM students. This position provides individual and group counseling (as needed) to a caseload of COM clients, with these services delivered at the COM, at the UNC Counseling Center and online. This position provides consultation and outreach services in support of meeting students' academic and personal needs. An important focus of outreach is helping students cope with the stress of medical school. Additionally, this position works directly with COM faculty and staff providing consultation and education regarding counseling services, crisis intervention, supporting students in distress, and referrals. This position provides guidance and support to students, staff, and faculty to ensure that community behavioral health needs are met with compassion, respect, and cultural sensitivity. This position is part of a team that is committed to reducing health inequities. Job Duties: Direct/Clinical Services 60%: This position provides crisis/drop-in counseling hours and ongoing clinical mental health counseling and psychological services for COM students. This position provides individual and group counseling. The position provides culturally sensitive and informed mental health assessment and services, e.g., related to developing effective treatment plans, safety plans, and making appropriate referrals for clients. This position communicates and coordinates with campus partners to serve student clients with appropriate releases of information in place. Clinical services are provided at the Counseling Center, at the College of Osteopathic Medicine and online. Consultation and Outreach 20%: This position is responsible for consultation and outreach services to students, faculty, staff, and campus partners in the College of Osteopathic Medicine related to mental health issues and student concerns. This position develops and presents workshops on topics related to mental health, coping with the stress of medical school, and student success. This position attends COM events to promote awareness of services. Outreach also includes providing presentations or consultations to faculty, staff and COM units related to student mental health and counseling services. This position supports the objectives and vision, mission, values of the College of Osteopathic Medicine related to enhancing student wellness. The person in this position attends College of Osteopathic Medicine departmental and division meetings or events as needed. This position may serve on COM committees or subcommittees to support general mental wellness initiatives within the COM. General Administration 10%: This position maintains timely and thorough documentation of activities, maintains knowledge of ethical and legal standards of care, provides all services in keeping with these standards, and obtains appropriate continuing education to maintain professional license and develop professional skills. This position contributes to the continued development and improvement of COM and Counseling Center policies and procedures and works collaboratively with the Counseling Center team including the Executive Director, Training Coordinator, Office Manager, and other clinical staff. As needed this position collaborates with other Counseling Center staff to execute essential work duties of the Office Manager when the Office Manager is not available. Training/Supervision 10%: This position may provide ongoing education and consultation to other Counseling Center staff and trainees. This position consults with Center leadership routinely and stays grounded in current practices and procedures of the Counseling Center. The position exchanges relevant information about the COM with other staff so that staff in leadership roles can support supervisors related to administrative supervision. Minimum Qualifications: Education: Minimum requirements: an earned master’s degree in counseling, Social Work or closely related field. The degree must qualify the candidate for licensure as a mental health professional (e.g., counselor, social worker, psychologist) in Colorado. Preferred qualifications: Doctorate degree in Counseling Psychology, Clinical Psychology, Counselor Education or closely related field. Experience: Minimum experience: One year of counseling experience (candidate should also have completed multiple practicum and/or internships in providing counseling to a client population). Preferred experience: Experience providing clinical services to diverse populations. Experience in responding to and managing client crises. At least one year of experience working in a university counseling center. Experience providing mental health and wellness counseling to college students. Understanding of the stress experienced by students of medical or professional schools and experience meeting the needs of these students. Experience assisting professional students with performance-related mental health concerns. Certification/Registration/Licensing: Licensed or license eligible as a counselor, social worker, or psychologist in Colorado within 3 months of hire Ability: Excellent and demonstrated organizational, communication, and people skills Problem-solving and decision-making skills, emotional intelligence, and independent judgement Must be able to provide high-quality clinical services, including mental health assessment, and individual therapy, group counseling, and outreach programming Must be able to provide effective counseling services to clients from diverse racial, ethnic, cultural, socioeconomic, religious, ability, sexual and gender identities. Strong clinical skills in assessment, time-limited individual counseling, group counseling, crisis intervention and case management Skilled in coordinating, directing, evaluating, and implementing case management services. Awareness of changing trends in mental health practice, and the ability to apply innovative strategies to meet the needs of a diverse student population. Knowledge of issues related to college student development and professional school stress. High level of organization for effective maintenance of records and charts in alignment with confidentiality practices Computer skills including Microsoft Office and virtual meeting products Special Considerations: None
