JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE: ELL Guidance Counselor: Bilingual Spanish
Location: Middle School
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Illinois Guidance Certificate
2. Fluent in Spanish: speaking, listening, reading, writing
3. Bicultural: Ability to work effectively with native Spanish speaking parents; families that have emigrated
REPORTS TO:
Principal,Director of ELL,Assistant Superintendent of Special Services
PURPOSE OF JOB:
Assist ELL students (Active ELLS, Monitor Year 1, Monitor Year 2) in academic, emotional, social adjustment or functioning so they can pursue excellence in learning
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Counsel students singly or in small groups in a language understandable to them i.e.: Spanish written and verbal.
- Confer with faculty/staff as necessary.
- Work closely with staff and parents in identifying and placing students in appropriate school programs in a language understandable to them i.e.: English/Spanish written and verbal.
- Meet with all new students and parents to discuss curriculum, school policies and activities, academic placement and to develop academic program in a language understandable to them i.e.: Spanish written and verbal.
- Provide small group guidance sessions for new students to facilitate social and academic adjustment in a language understandable to them i.e.: Spanish written and verbal.
- Assist in any task that will enhance the services of the ELL Department as deemed necessary by the Director of ELL.
- Monitor students; academic progress by means of progress reports and both student and parent conferences in a language understandable to them i.e.: Spanish written and verbal.
- Implement transition process of students from elementary to middle school by visiting and scheduling students at elementary buildings.
- Provide counseling minutes listed on IEP of ELL students.
- Coordinate parent education programs to foster a connectedness to the middle schools and be informed of available school and community resources available to both students and families in a language understandable to them i.e.: Spanish written and verbal.
- Coordinate student events/field trips to foster academic excellence/continuation of learning ie: field trips to colleges.
- Perform other tasks and responsibilities assigned by the Principal/Director of ELL/Assistant Superintendent for Special Services.
