
Assistant Director of Family Literacy and Multilingual Learner Programs for Adult Education
Job Description
Summary/ Goal of Position:
The Assistant Director (or Coordinator) of Family Literacy and Multilingual Learner Programs for Adult Education oversees the development, implementation, and management of these programs. This role ensures high-quality instruction, compliance with program guidelines, and alignment with the needs of a diverse adult learner population. The position includes coaching and supporting instructional staff to improve teaching practices and ensure adult learners achieve measurable skill gains. Success metrics for this role will include program-level outcomes measured through the National Reporting System (NRS) established by the Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) for adult education providers, as well as student retention.
Essential Tasks of the Position (Illustrative, not inclusive):
- Act as a member of the WERACE leadership team, providing program leadership and oversight;
- As a member of the WERACE leadership team, teach one class per program year;
- Oversee assigned adult education programs focused on language acquisition and family engagement, ensuring compliance with state and federal guidelines;
- Act as the primary point of contact for student intake and placement in language development and family literacy programs;
- Collaborate with faculty to connect assessments to instruction, ensuring quality data collection and analysis;
- Coach and support instructors in the use of evidence-based instructional strategies to promote measurable skill gains for adult learners;
- Utilize CASAS and LACES platforms to monitor student progress, attendance, measurable skill gains, and retention rates;
- Develop and implement strategies to improve program enrollment, persistence, and retention;
- Provide ongoing training and support to faculty for effective use of data, curriculum alignment, and instructional best practices;
- Coordinate with community organizations and partners to promote and expand family literacy and language acquisition programming;
- Ensure the security and proper administration of all assessment materials;
- Support the preparation of grant applications and compliance reporting for assigned programs;
- Manage and evaluate instructors within assigned programs with support from the Regional Director;
- Travel frequently between primary program sites and occasionally to other adult education provider locations, as needed, to support program operations;
- Perform other duties as delegated by the Regional Director of Adult and Continuing Education
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- In-depth understanding of ESL, citizenship preparation, and family literacy program goals;
- Familiarity with CASAS and LACES data platforms and NRS accountability measures;
- Strong organizational and leadership skills to support program improvement and innovation;
- Knowledge of English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) for adult education;
- Demonstrated background in exemplary teaching of English as a Second Language in an educational setting (PK�12 and/or adult education);
- Ability to coach and develop instructional staff to improve student outcomes;
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work with diverse learners, staff, and community partners.
Minimum Qualifications:
- MA/MS degree required;
- Minimum of three (3) years of teaching experience in adult education and/or teaching English as a second language within a pk-12 school system, or related service field with demonstrated leadership skills.
- Valid Connecticut teaching certification with endorsements in adult education programs (e.g. 088);
- CASAS proctor and facilitator certification required within 90 days of hire.
This is a single open position, with title and salary determined by certification. The successful candidate if holding a current Connecticut 092 Intermediate Administration or Supervision endorsement will be appointed as Assistant Director; candidates without this endorsement will be appointed as Program Coordinator.

Regional Director of Adult and Continuing Education
Work Schedule:
This is a full-time, 12-month position. Flexible work schedule, to include one-two evenings per week when programs are in session.
Compensation:
The salary for a Coordinator will range from $70,000-$95,000. The salary for an Assistant Director will range from $97,375-$128,125. Salary will be commensurate with experience, qualifications, and certification.
