Job Description Summary

Weld County is seeking the equivalent to a Party Survey Chief who is an independent, career minded, self-motivated individual up for challenging projects including all types of Land Surveying related work. Projects include but are not limited to, boundary surveys, easement/right-of way surveys, topographic surveys, GPS control surveys, design surveys, aerial mapping ground support, and construction layout. This is primarily a field position with some office work anticipated. Will work under the responsible charge of a professional land surveyor.

Job Description

Field Work - 70%

  • Set up and operate surveying equipment including electronic total station, data collectors, differential level and Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment.
  • Perform surveys for construction, topographic, right of way, and control.
  • Work in a safe manner at all times.
  • May have complete responsibility and care for survey equipment, material, and vehicle.
  • Work independently as a 1 person crew.
  • Identify the need for training courses and contribute to course content.
  • May be required to supervise a surveying technician either full time or on a temporary basis.
  • Use and application of County policy, CDOT Specifications for surveying, and any other applicable reference manual as a source for regulations to complete assignments.
  • Perform survey tasks in accordance with state and local regulations.

Administration - 20%

  • Gather survey data and maintain specified records of technical data, perform computations, plot data, or draw curves, graphs, and charts.
  • Assist in the design of new systems, processes, product, or equipment and works in the development of concepts and designs.
  • Daily upload and download of data collectors.
  • Provide Right-Of-Way information on county roads.

Other Duties as Assigned - 10%

  • Must be available to respond to and work extraordinary hours during emergency events.
  • Assist with snow and other inclement weather operations.
  • Assist with assignments requiring independent and individual contribution.

Required Qualifications

Required Education

  • High school diploma/GED

 

And

 

Required Work Experience

  • Five years’ experience in a surveying work environment.

Or

  • Post high school education may be substituted for work experience, with extensive training in a specialty field.

Or

  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skill, and ability.

 

Preferred Education

  •  Bachelor’s degree in a related field.

 

Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid regular Colorado driver’s license by the employment start date and maintain a valid license for the duration of employment.
  • Surveying requirement is for registration as a Land Surveyor Intern or ability to obtain within four years.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

 

Ability to read and comprehend legal descriptions, survey maps and construction plans.

 

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret legal descriptions, survey plats, construction drawings, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.

 

Ability to perform survey tasks in accordance with state and local regulations.

 

Concepts and principles of Construction surveying, topographic surveying, control surveying and boundary surveying.

 

Ability to locate or establish vertical and horizontal control, right of way, section corners, boundaries and property lines.

 

General knowledge of surveying principles and practices.

 

Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratio, and proportions to practical situations. Surveying requires demonstrated knowledge of coordinate geometry and mathematical understanding of horizontal and vertical curves.

 

Ability to create, modify, and print AutoCAD Civil 3D files.

 

Ability to operate GPS and conventional survey grade equipment.

 

Applied general knowledge of survey related computer equipment and programs.

 

Candidate must pass background check prior to employment start date.

 

Candidate must pass a substance use screening prior to employment start date.

 

This position will participate in random substance use screening.

 

Candidate must pass a physical demands evaluation post offer screen compatible to this position.

The employee will occasionally climb, squat, crawl, stoop, kneel, carry, and reach overhead. Employee will regularly perform the following: reach angularly, wrist flexion/extension, elbow flexion/extension, supination/pronation, and grasp. Specific vision abilities required by this job title include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to hazards, temperature change, fumes or airborne particles and vibration. The employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and is occasionally exposed to extreme heat and cold temperatures. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.


This position is non-exempt from the minimum wage and overtime requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is therefore eligible for overtime pay.
